KBT Race vs Pure (both backlit) - which to buy?

Thread Starter
After weeks of browsing, I have narrowed down my first mechanical keyboard to two decisions:
*Keep in mind, in one hour, I will be going to Best buy/Frys to test out switches on mech. keyboards*
(I hope to find some on display, I will feel akward asking to open before buying)

KBT Race (backlit) - I believe this is mounted on PCB (I don't know jack about keyboards)
KBT Pure (backlit) - I believe this will have an aluminum plate

I believe Ripster said the layout on the race is 75% like the noppooo & the pure is 60% like the poker. I'm not sure what is meant by this, but I'm assuming he/she means layout (which, I'm not familiar with any of there layouts).

The race will run me $105-115 + shipping (which might be $15) & the Pure... I don't know, and I believe qtan is selling it... so I'm assuming shipping will be $30. I have no clue what the Pure will be priced at. I can also buy a set of white caps for the race for $35 (that will come in addition with the keyboard, and the LED can illuminate through the keys).

If I am correct about PCB vs Aluminum, which is preferred? Will I only feel a difference if I bottom out?

Whichever layout fits you best.

Poker is similar to pure and choc mini is similar to the race.

Both have pcb mounted switches if I'm not mistaken.

Ah, so there are PCB mounted - cherry mounted - and costar mounted? or are the cherry/costars stabilizers for the switches? Sorry, for my lack of knowledge on this subject.

I will just have to go and check out the poker/mini lay out and report back in two minutes.

What about the Pure having aluminum casing (I believe it's called casing or mounting)? Is there a benefit to having this compared to the Race (Which I believe doesn't have it)?

Also, poker isn't backlit. You have it confused with the pure.

Cherry and costar are the style of stabilizers. I have yet to see any pcb mounted boards with costar stabilizers so chances are both will come with cherry stabilizers.

Alu case is a matter of taste. I personally like it because it gives the keyboard more weight to it and doesn't feel as cheap. Also, changing keycaps will be more of a pain on the race due to its weird keycap sizes on some keys.

Btw what frys are you going to? One in manhattan beach or Glendale? The one in MB should have the steelseries 7G with blacks, blackwidow with blues and corsair with reds.

I will change my title, that totally was a mistake on my part (my bad, and thanks for poining it out)

I barely have any gas, and I'll be going to the one in burbank (5min away from Glendale). The thing is, what if none are on display? Do I just try to press down on the casing (hehe)? Or do I be "rude", and ask to open before buying (which I won't be doing any buying over there).

I would love to have the aluminum casing, because I hate when my keyboard moves around (I think they have both have rubber matts under them), and a heavy feeling would be great.

I am participating in a group buy, and it's $105 for blue/black and $115 for red/brown switches and you get an additional set of white key caps for only $35. So if I go with the Race, I suppose it will be hard to change keycaps... but I can have a white set, just in case I learn how to solder/mod. (I bought a $15 solder kit that comes with a sodler from Frys, that teaches me how to do it)

I don't mind the layout of either one, but I don't know what else to consider besides the key cap changing part (which might be a big deal, but I don't know.. so new to the scene)

Even if they don't have them on display, pull one of the keyboards and it should have exposed keys for you to try.

and yeah, I meant Burbank. I always get those two confused. Personally, I'd go with the Pure. But I've been using my poker for almost a year now so I'm very used to the layout. Plus, the whole easier to change keycaps thing. And, you can get a aluminum case from either vortex or oneproduct's group buy. if mkawa doesn't continue to try to change every single bit of it (yeah, passive aggressive anger.)

Thanks ! smile.gif West LA?

That keyboard looks awesome!

iMav was kind enough to order extras, and he gave me by today to go and try out some key switches before I place my order.

Initially, I wanted a blue with white LEDs. Very interested to see what will happen, how about I call Frys/Best buy and ask to speak to someone who specializes in mech. keyboards (lol)... ok, maybe I can just ask what they have on display.

@ waar, Vortex is saying they will get 35 Pures in by the 4th of next month. I believe he said this:

"About Pure (Purple LED) + Aluminum case (black) , this week will production about 35 pcs (20 pcs , without Red switch ), If anyone want it , just tell us !!"

I wonder what the pricing would be compared to the Race, I already guess the shipping is twice as much from iMavs (since he will be shipping from the states using USPS priority shipping.

EDIT: On the phone with someone @ Frys... he's checking to see if they have any mechanical keyboards on display! My next question will be to check.

Yup, West L.A.  Let me know if you change your mind.  I probably have more to display than Fry's. biggrin.gif
