Bad day on the 13th

Thread Starter
My whole house dehumidifier died while I was at work, on a very humid day, so the dewpoint temperature in my house spiked up to 18ºC.

This is a problem because my chiller was running 15ºC water to the water blocks in my folding team competition rig, and I hadn't bothered to insulate them yet because I normally maintain the dewpoint temperature at 12-13ºC.

The real turn of the knife came at about 11am when my thermostat emailed me a warning about the high humidity.
I was 100 miles away, and completely unable to do anything about what I knew was going to happen to my poor folding rig.aaskull.gif
Even though I can control my HVAC system with my iPhone, I couldn't kick the AC on to pull the humidity down because I disconnected my AC unit last weekend to pour a new concrete slab for it, and haven't reconnected it yet.redface.gif

I haven't fully assessed the damage yet, but there was a shocking amount of condensation in the bottom of the case....

In Texas? Seriously? When I lived in Plano (Dallas suburb) it was hot during the summers and mild and rainy during the winters. But NEVER humid. The summers there were actually more dry than humid.

Also, your thermostat can e-mail you? What has the world come to?

Sounds like you could use a humidistat as an emergency shutdown. The cheaper mechanical ones can be found under $50.. the more accurate digital controllers go for $100 and up.

You might want to consider dropping the temp/dew point inside the case using the chiller. Basically just add a small single rad to the chilled loop and recirculate the air inside the case. You would have to block off all other fan ports and create an air intake for the psu to keep warm moist air out. Theoretically, you could operate down to 0c.. the only limiting factor would be the case sweating on the outside. Some Akasa or insulation on the inside of the case would take care of that.

Btw, I'm pretty sure there's an app or hack to shutdown your pc from a cell phone.

Hope everything's ok.

I've been to busy with work to mess with it much, but GTX560 Ti video card is dead. Condensation puddled in one of the cutouts in the water block for a VRM and shorted it out, even left a scorch mark on the copper block.

I may try soldering a new VRM on to see if I can get it running again.

When I get things up and running again, I'll actually insulate things so issues like this won't happen.
I've had the Dragon Skin, and other materials for a good while now, but never got around to it. redface.gif
