Adding a physx card

I would like to add a physx card to my ATI system but I'm not sure how to do it or if it's worth the price.

My co-worker is offering me a 9800GTX+ for 50 bucks and I want to take him up on the offer to use as a physx card with my 7970.

From what I understand, this is doable in windows 7 ultimate I'm just not sure how...could someone give me a guide or point me in the right direction? (Search was kinda useless)

TL:DR With an ATI card as my primary video card, how do I add a 9800GTX+ to my system on the pci-e x4 lane to use as a physx card?

I haven't really looked into how to do it, either, but do you actually plan to play any of the 5 games (jk, there's probably 7 rolleyes.gif)? If not, it's a waste. THat is a good price for the card, though.

Would physx card even be necessary with a 7970?
It's not like you are going to bottlenecking that card anytime soon.

From what I understand CPU physx is still software bottlenecked so I was going to put a cheap-o nvidia card to handle it for me.

AMD cards dont use physX?

This is correct. Adding the 9800GTX+ is to bring PhysX to your machine. But if that is what you want to do it is relatively easy. Just download the current driver and control panel for the Nvidia card, within the control panel on the left side pane is a PhysX menu there you choose if you want it to decide automatically what is best or select a card or CPU. I used to use a Galaxy 9800GTX+ for dedicated PhysX with my 260. Now that I got the 560Ti I use the 260 as dedicated PhysX.

From what I understand this won't work since I'm using a dual manufacturer system. I believe you need to hack the drivers to force physx with an ATI card as primary...just don't know how to do it.

To enable physX, it has to be done through NVIDIA Control Panel. It should have an option that says 'SLI and PhysX Settings', and you can set the GPU up to be PhysX only.

Though good luck getting it to work with an AMD GPU as your first card. I have heard of work arounds to get it to work, but they were quite long winded iirc (this was a couple years ago). Chances are unless you play Mafia II regularly, or anything in the Unreal Engine, you don't actually have many PhysX games so it isn't worth the hassle. As ahhell said, you're not bottlenecking that card anytime soon.
