AMD's 6970 had a 256-bit bus because they have never had anything greater than that. Then look what happened, 7970 came out and they upped the bus width. What you wanna bet 8970 has a 384-bit bus?

nVidia has been rocking >256-bit busses since the GTX2XX series. This is absolutely a mid-range nVidia GPU that they released to stay relevant while they perfect the GK110. Why bother blowing AMD out of the water and play their whole hand when AMD has already publicly announced their next series features GCN2.0?

For comical effect: Let me play my Blastoise (nVidia) against your Charmander (AMD) and blow you away, then you turn around and rape my Bulbasaur with your Charizard next turn. Oh yeah, Pokemon.

No matter what you Nvidia fans say 15% is lower then what was bragged about by Nvidia and yet again is not good enough for the wait you guys have had to endure.

GTX680 - Late, Didn't smash the 7970 as much as it was hyped too.
Call me a fan boy, call me a noob I'm really not bothered...... You can't argue facts and numbers.

Hype is irrelevant. Nothing ever lives up to the hype.

Thing is this thing is beating the 7970 by 15% while being priced at the same price point. Win in my books. Especially when it has a lower power consumption and a smaller die for lower temps.

Previous Nvidia flagships have always been ~550mm^2.
The card might effectively be the flagship at the time because of the price but it definitely isn't the huge Nvidia chip that we're used to.

I thought GK104 was ~300mm^2 while GK110 was ~500mm^2. Tahiti by comparison is 355mm^2.

edit: Okay, 680 is GK104 (naming???), and this is supposed to be GK110:

you're not going to need more than 2GB outside of a multi monitor setup, and even then the 680 will likely be bandwidth limited with its 256bit bus just as much if not more so than its memory buffer

that being said, the 680 looks like its shaping up to be the definitive single monitor GPU

Correct. So we will have to wait for the gtx 780 to see the monster.

But it is kind of impressive the small gtx 680 will probably outperform the bigger 7970.

2. Boosting has more then likely given crap TDP readings, is the 195w TDP for the card on base clock or the card on boost clock?
