smoke is a strong word, but if nVidia has truly regained the efficiency advantage per mm^2 and the smaller GK104 (294mm^2) ends up faster than the larger 7970 (352mm^2), we very well could see nVidia producing a 500+mm^2 flagship GPU that is actually faster than the 7990. Keep in mind that, if we are to believe this report, the 7990 will have a lower clock rate and thus should be a tad slower than two 7970s. It might not be fast enough to "smoke" the 7990, but it very well could be faster overall. Merely trading blows would be huge as well.
