Right, a friend brought over her laptop, Black screen, with cursor!, (ALL FIXES have not worked)

I have ran some diagnostics with linux ubuntu, just basic diags like testing whether normal ubuntu works or safe graphics mode. Well thing is on windows 7 it has a black screen with cursor.
Also when you start in normal ubuntu mode with the disc, it just doesn't load the kernel, starts going to 3% then boom, nope, then what i did was boot into safe graphics mode, this worked until we got to the part after the network initialisation, it crashed the "graphics" server 6 times in a row, and said something is seriously badly wrong, this led me to believe her graphics chip is dead. She had a HP pavillion entertainment PC (Laptop). Well now what i want to do is backup her files from the boot disc i have, i want to back it up to an external hard drive, but can't access any OS of course. is there any simple OS's that use the bare minimum? not even onboard graphics.

So TL;DR

Please provide me with operating systems that have a basic graphical GUI and don't need any drivers to function.

Please tell me how to backup from a repair disc, if even possible, i can enter CMD from it and browse her windows installation.

Thanks.

Can you transfer the files to another HDD, and re install the OS? you can always buy a sata transfer cable if you don't have one. They are relatively cheap.

I know you can get a windows 8 beta for consumers now, I have NO idea how stable it is.

Not even an ubuntu start disc works, so even reinstalling wont help, the graphics chip keep crashing even when in "safe graphics mode" says it keeps restarting, i have no choice but to assume her graphics chip is dead, i have to find an OS or boot disc i can use to backup her HDD, i'm not taking it apart as im not going to be the one who has to pay for her laptop. this is one of those unfixable things, and i want to take an image of her HDD.

Try CloneZilla (http://clonezilla.org/downloads.php ) + YUMI ( http://www.pendrivelinux.com/yumi-multiboot-usb-creator/ ). You can use the YUMI to download Clonezilla I believe. All you need is a blank USB drive to install it to. And you can install all sorts of diagnostics tools at once if you feel like doing diagnostics etc (yep, multi-boot from a USB drive).

Sounds kihe your easiest option to back it up is to take the HD out and plug it into your rig, .it should be as easy as undoing a couple of srews on the bottom and slip the drive out, plug it into one of your spare MB sata ports.

have you tried booting in VGA mode?
That boots with the most basic of drivers.

tap F8 like going into safemode and select VGA mode.

If Ubuntu live CD fails to load perhaps it is bad Ram
Take out all of his ram and only put one in, see if it boots... if it does put in the other and see if it boots...
If you put on stick in and it still doesnt boot, try the other one [only having one piece in at a time]
also try the other sockets.

I had one time where i had a machine that wouldn't boot, took out the ram and put it back in and BOOM fired right up.

Good Luck

The live CD loads, it just keeps saying "Graphics server restarted 6 times, something seriously bad is wrong"
in windows i can only see a cursor, and that's it (no graphical interface. the PC boots, so it's not bad RAM, thanks, i'll try the VGA mode, but doubt that'd work as even the ubuntu safe graphics mode is "VGA" mode, it's just... irreparable, i'm pretty sure it's the graphics chip.
