Does it make sense to run lots of instances?

Thread Starter
So I've got one instance of FAH running on each core right now, and things are humming along just great. But i was thinking, would it make sense to have two instances of FAH running per core? I would assume that this means i would be working on more WUs but the time it would take to complete a given WU would be increased..

I guess I'm asking this: is it best to stick to one instance per core? or is there some happy magic number that works best?

Only 1 per core. Running more than one won't increase your points. A core runs WU A and then WU B in the same time it takes to run WU A and B at the same time. All you'll do is eat up more RAM.

Some people have reported that folding with 4 instances instead of 2 has increased their output by about 30%.

Then go for it. I guess if anything can handle it, a Conroe can.

Hyperthreading helps. Obviously only for Pentium 4's, but I certainly saw an increase in points with running 2 FAH clients on one CPU. Dual core is better, since it actually doubles the output if you run 1 on each core, but on an HT core, you can see 25-35% increase, like bigvaL said. You can try it, but generally it is better to turn out WU's faster, since it helps the cause more.
