Looking for opinions on CRT a friend gave me: Samsung 997DF 19" CRT

So a buddy gave me this 19" CRT (he was moving and didn't want it and bought an LCD for his new apartment), its a Samsung 997DF. I'm just looking for opinions on it, such as:

Was it a good CRT in its day?

It does several different resolutions and has a nice maximum resolution, considering replacing my LCD with it, should I?

If you have had first hand experience with it, any thoughts?

I know that the Trinitron based monitors (Sony tubes, really good CRTS made with them) are awesome but I haven't been able to get my hands on a nice 21" one, is this comparable to a Trinitron?

Thanks -

It can do 1920x1440 at 64 hz or 1600x1200 at 76 hz. What LCD are you using?

It's a rebranded ACER 23" 1920x1080 TFT/TN panel. Not great. 5ms response. Does the job. I also have a Samsung 206BW that I like more than this but it's only 1680x1050 and quite a few years old now (but 2ms response).

I know the Samsung CRT has an RGB color mode which is supposed to be good. I just would have to totally rearrange my desk area (I have a hutch and the desk is directly against a wall) to make it fit where I wouldn't be sitting two feet away from my desk to make it work. tongue.gif

I want to use it and see crisp clear gaming on it but it's the whole 'size' thing. It's sooooo huge that the desk (which I got free from CL) just doesn't do it justice. If I had my old desk (a sweetsauce corner desk with loads of room for two-three LCD's or a single huge CRT) it wouldn't be a problem. frown.gif

From what I've read about the Samsung, it has excellent color reproduction. I'd get it if I were you.

I checked the Samsung under my desk...

450

Purchased from Newegg sometime in 2004-2005. I remember when I purchased this monitor I had to send it back once and then refuse the second replacement attempt because Newegg kept sending me the gray one instead of the ivory color by accident. They eventually corrected the issue on the third attempt. Funny story though.

Unfortunately, I haven't even turned this thing on in over 5 years, so I don't remember if it was any good. May as well try now since you guys brought it up!
