Cheap but powerful PC build help needed

Thread Starter
Hello all,

I know there are plenty of like minded threads all over this place but they all offer slightly different advice and I'm just not sure which or who I should be going by.

I have my own preferences but I haven't built a PC so I'm a complete novice hence why dipping into other threads hasn't managed to find me any help needed.

I really REALLY like the look of this case here:

http://www.ebuyer.com/236437-fractal-design-define-r3-black-pearl-case-usb3-0-fd-ca-def-r3-usb3-bl

And I have a pretty much good idea of what components I want to add but the thing is, I'm worried in case the components don't fit as they are too big for the case or they just don't plug in anywhere.

I understand I have to buy a PSU for that case but no idea what I'm looking for and even how to fit it to the case. I assume all components I buy come with some sorta instructions?

Anywho lemme just list what I have in mind so far and I would be grateful of any advice of what I should be getting instead and why or if what I have chosen is good enough. If I need anything I may have forgotten I would also be grateful for the heads up.

Motherboard:

http://www.ebuyer.com/278044-gigabyte-ga-ph67-ds3-b3-h67-socket-1155-7-1-channel-hd-audio-atx-motherboard-ga-ph67-ds3-b3

Processor: (Not sure if I should get the i7 or the i5, I know i7 is better but not sure if it's worth paying more and being more future proof or just installing it later if needed if that is even possible).

http://www.ebuyer.com/251596-intel-core-i5-2500k-3-3ghz-socket-1155-6mb-cache-retail-boxed-processor-bx80623i52500k

Memory:

http://www.ebuyer.com/247674-corsair-8gb-2x4gb-ddr3-1333mhz-xms3-memory-kit-cl9-1-5v-unbuffered-cmx8gx3m2a1333c9

Graphics Card:

http://www.ebuyer.com/254405-asus-gtx-560ti-directcu-ii-1gb-gddr5-dual-dvi-mini-hdmi-pci-e-engtx560-ti-dcii-2di-1gd5

HDD:

http://www.ebuyer.com/319641-barracuda-2tb-sata-3-5in-7200rpm-64mb-6gb-s-in-st2000dm001

Apologies for the ebuyer links, I'm not advertising them I'm just going all from one site to figure out what I need to make things easier to manage.

I guess I also need a copy of Windows 7 which will add to the price. Overall though I am looking to spend around £800 max. I keep going around in circles from thinking about building a PC to being lazy and just buying a shop bought one like an Alienware X51. At least if I make this post your help should manage to sway me to the build it side and save me more pennies at the same time.

Change the mobo to P67 or Z68 chipset so that you can overclock, that one is h67.

Go for an i5. You can always upgrade at a later date if you decided its warranted. minimal gain, especially in gaming at least.

It's hard to be "cheap" with "powerful"

But there are good "values"

And don't be lazy by buying a pre-built system. The same amount of money you spend will be much more worth it to build yourself.

And I would recommend a Z68 motherboard over the P67 or H67. With Z68 you are able to use an SSD as a cache, and use the onboard graphics. (Just in case you need to go without a discrete GPU, you never know)

As for the old i5 vs i7 debate, it depends on your usage. If you do a lot of encoding and video production, then the extra threads from an i7 will definitely be noticeable. But if all you do is game and do general stuff, then an i5 will suffice. If anything, you can use the extra money from getting an i5 and invest into a better cooling solution so you can overclock it so it will make up the difference to the i7.

For a PSU, I recommend getting a 500w minimum. Again it all boils down to what your goals are. If you plan on upgrading in the future, then you might as well invest in something like a 650w or 750w. This will allow you to add in a second graphics card or upgrade to a higher end one.

like everybody said, go 2500K best bang for the buck gaming cpu (see also ivy bridge 3570K by late april if you can wait), change mobo to z68( z77 mobo for ivy) but z68 has upgrade path to ivy bridge also, so that your cpu's igp can be utilize while waiting for 78xx or the gtx 660, then for ram change to 1600 speed as this is the current sweet spot of Sandy Bridge platform, the 8GB cpapacity is ok, your case is your discretion but you may want to see the corsair 300R, classy look cheaper laso. for psu for single card 550~600W, then for SLI/xfire ~ 750W...

Rossy, what are you using the computer for? Gaming, video encoding, photoshop? Are you going to be overclocking?

To give you some information we need to know what you are using the system for.
