budget build

comments? suggestions?
trying to make a decent general purpose/web browsing machine for < 300 shipped. Doesn't need to be a power house. Also doesn't even need to be intel. if there is a better AMD solution available I'd consider it.
Already have sata HDD and CDROM
i should mention its an upgrade from a lga775 celeron with 1gb ram. as of right now it can barely run a flash game. I'm looking for something that can play those silly farmvile type flash games with out stuttering. I've taken a long hard look at the upgrade path for the existing lga775 machine I think its due for an overhaul.

Oh my god that power supply NO

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371045

For your price range you have to options. What you have there, or a AMD APU.

APU is a bit more performance all around, but more power consumption and is probably a dead socket.

The pentium is good enough, low power, and can be upgraded to any other sandy bridge down the road.

yes in consideration of the intel processor I looked at the supported cpu list on biowares website. the upgrade path for this machine doesn't look bad. I can always slap some more ram and a better sandy bridge when the time comes. its even got a 16x pci-e so I could even get an external video card need be. this machine looks like its got options.

BIOSTAR, oh god no. Try a more reliable brand like ones from ASUS, ASRock, or GIGABYTE.

Not great. Particularly power supply. Suggested changes:

Case: Bit Fenix Merc Alpha ($35 @ us.ncix.com)
I've never looked at the case you linked, but I can guarantee the merc alpha isn't ****. It's one of the most recommended budget cases, and I own one (and would recommend it). Comes with one moderate quality exhaust fan, PSU on bottom, just a standard case. This'll actually be cheaper than newegg, because us.ncix.com has free shipping over $50 (also get at least one of the two items below). On a budget build, don't pay $20 for shipping. $7 max if you get the asrock -gs. Yikes! Also, if the DVD-player and HDD aren't just random spares, you might consider re-using case as well.

If you're going to pay $50 for a power supply, get the antec earthwatts 500d or the rosewill green 530w
If you value rebates, get the xfx core 450w @ us.ncix.com for $55-$25 rebate. All of those are spectacular overkill, but at least they're quality power. Sadly, there aren't really any quality units lower than 400ish watt. Actually, seasonic has some, but they have short connectors and are at least $45 anyway.

If you want to leave room for upgrades, get the 1x4gb kingston value ram for like $17 @ us.ncix.com
Otherwise newegg usually has two 2x2gb 1333mhz options for $20, a few bucks less than what you have selected.

The biostar does not have a PWM case fan header (it does have a PWM cpu fan header - so one controllable one not controllable). Also, I think it has DVI & vga outs. Edit: yep, it does. Oddly, only the one you have selected with free shipping. The asrock -vs has a controllable case fan header (2 controllable fan headers in total) and a single vga outlet, the -gs has vga + dvi and 2 controllable fan headers. I might be off on the -vs/-gs, you can check that for yourself. Your call if DVI outlet is necessary (check your monitor)/$7 or whatever more is worth it for the second controllable fan header. Don't bother to look for cheaper mobos at us.ncix.com, there aren't any. Asrock is a better company than biostar, but at super-budget H61, it probably wont' matter.

If you don't have a DVD drive, I think there are some decent combo deals wtth the Intel pentiums. Edit: nevermind. Also, if SC2 is an important game for you, you might consider the g850 for rougly $15 more. If not, the g620 should be fine.

This should be great for what you want to do. There's not a better AMD option. You could get a slightly worse processor with better integrated graphics capable of basic 3D gaming for more money (a-series CPU with FM1 motherboard), but it's outperformed by an intel pentium + cheapo discrete GPU at roughly the same price.

Yes, your upgrade paths are a discrete GPU (don't get less than a 7750 or 6850, in my opinion, or its a waste of money), 8gb instead of 4gb RAM, and a (non-overclockable) sandy bridge or ivy-bridge i5 or i7. Plus an SSD (SATA2 or just taking the minor slowdown from a SATA3 drive). Given what you say you want to do with the computer, the SSD may actually be the best of those upgrades.

As for your current graphics & gaming, you can play Blizzard games fine on low, stuff like Skyrim on lowest settings with noticeable slow downs at graphically intense parts of the game (but barely playable), older games like Empire: Total War on lowest settings, and many games essentially not at all. Flash games should be no problem.

P.S. I'm assuming that's newegg in the states, not newegg.ca. If it's newegg.ca, screw them and buy from a canadian retailer with good selection (then price-match from other canadian retailers).

Edit: If you don't have a spare copy of windows, you may be able to obtain a legal copy by using the windows 8 beta. I'm not sure about that though. Something you might look into.

Amd apu would do much better. I use amds old intragated and i can tell you even rich webpages shutter as you scoll. An apu fits this build much better. A4 maybe? Weaker cpu, but on a general use pc, its not that your going to stress frist, its trying to stream 1080p video that will kill this build.
