Is it worth it for me to get a GTX680?

Thread Starter
Look at my sig rig, now look at the GTX680. Now look back at my sig rig redface.gif

But seriously, I bought the HD7970 on launch day (coming from 2 GTX560 Ti's) because I'd been waiting for a powerful enough single chip to replace my 2 cards. In the back of my mind, I told myself the card would be a place holder for nVidia's next top end card.. But now that its "generally" faster than a HD7970, I'm having some doubts.

Will MSI Afterburner be out of beta for the GTX680 and fully support the 7970? I can't use the beta, because it causes Windows to switch between the basic and aero interfaces as I'm typing (before you ask, yes hot keys are off).

After it all, though, I do miss my CUDA cores.

EDIT: Also, my 7970 has a GPUZ reported ASIC value of 54.3% rolleyes.gif

For me, if I had the 7970 I would wait since from all the rumors say that the 680 was intended to be a midrange card. Later this year I think the real 580 replacement will arrive, so I would hold out until then.

I agree with regles, just keep the 7970 and wait for what else is in the pipeline. The 680 is only the FIRST kepler card.

You have the 7970 already and even if the 680 is a bit better performance I'd still stay put unless your doing it for some other reasons like folding, need CUDA, going 3D Vision etc...

The 680 is their high end card this 600 series but basically on a mid-range 256 bit pcb with two six pin power connectors.

IF speculation is true ( and I've heard it's better than the GTX 590 from another OCN member who was lucky to have one pre-release), the real power house won't be out until the 8970 refresh of Tahiti.

The GK107 320 bit & GK110 384 bit will come with an eight pin and six pin connector and is the true upgrade that will compete with AMD's refresh.

Don't know how they pulled the performance on the 680 but they managed. We'll see next week some time. Prices and real benches not out yet but speculated rumors that can't be proven but consistent across many news releases.

So if your already past return point you should hang onto that 7970 (great card btw regardless) and hang until December for AMD Tahiti refresh and Nvidia Kepler refresh. One thing we've learned from refresh it results in about 15%-30% performance boost at best.
