Megaupload had many legit uses. I used it all the time to share personal files and school documents. In fact I had files on megaupload when it was taken down. If you think he was clearly guilty of anything, its providing a great cloud storage and file sharing service.

On top of which he's only recieved one legal document about so in the past 7? 8? years it was around. If they were so infringing, why didn't any company send any legal notices/documents?

Obviously he was indeed not as guilty as they wanted it to seem.

A) This is not a fruit of the poison tree situation. The raid itself was not illegal, they just went further than the scope of the warrant. Nothing taken related to the prosecution was taken illegally. Anyway, this is New Zealand law so US doctrines are not applicable.
B) The FBI was not involved in the raid.
C) Your lawyer telling you that something is not illegal *may* mitigate things, but it's not a defense. People will shop for attorneys who will tell them something is legal.

yes, even if dot com was guilty, which i do not believe so, if a court allows police to use any illegal gathered evidence, then whats to stop them from illegally busting into your house in the middle of the night and taking everything? whats to stop them from illegally tapping your phones and stuff. They have to have a warrant.

All four of the arrested men are accused of internet piracy and the FBI is seeking to extradite them to the US to face charges of conspiring to commit racketeering, conspiring to commit money laundering, copyright infringement, and aiding and abetting copyright infringement over the internet through the website Megaupload.

Simultaneous raids took place in Australia, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Germany, Canada, the Netherlands, Britain and the US.

The magazine said the police liaison in Washington, Detective Superintendent Mike Pannett, monitored activities around the world from the FBI's multi-agency command centre.

Clearly, the FBI had nothing to do with this. Clearly!

What I meant is that they did not conduct the raid, and I was replying in part to the quote above. Asking a country to extradite someone who has committed a crime is not insane, and he is getting a hearing before extradition.

YES! I wonder if this will set any precedents?

Yes, in the world we live it today, mass violations of rights are carried out w/o a check, or 2nd thought. Even if the guy was an arse, or whatever the case may be, what was done to him was a flagrant violation of his rights; not that anyone seems to care.

Good for dotcom. I'm sick of the us acting like the police force of the world. The US needs to stop worying about what they deem crimes in countries that does not consider it a crime.
