Hardware RAID for Xen

Thread Starter
Hey,

I've recently built a XenServer for playing around with (specs in sig). Xen is installed and working with a few VM's.

But the issue is that I only have 1 HDD in the box and I want to build a RAID1 for redundancy.

I've been looking on the Xen forums and there are ways to make software RAID or fakeRAID (that's the hardware RAID off the motherboard) work. But they all have their issues, what I want is true hardware raid with a dedicated controller.

The issue is that this is a home server and I can't afford a high end RAID card. Also I will only be using 2 mechanicals in RAID1 so I don't need a high end card.

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this card and whether or not it will work:

http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/2232100-adaptec-raid-1220sa-pcie-port-sata-p-24098.html?sort=2a

It is not on the official HCL but I know that doesn't mean everything.

If anyone can advise I would appreciate it. Also, I'm totally happy to hear other suggestions on controllers. Please remember I'm in Australia so Newegg is not an option...

Adaptec make good quality RAID cards, i would seriously think about it smile.gif

also try for a search on eBay and eBay Australia for RAID cards you can find some great deals on there for quality refurbished/used higher end cards thumb.gif

Thanks for your reply, do you have any experience with the card in question?

Also, on the Adaptec website it alludes to Windows software for managing the array.

Is this essential or can it work/rebuild without it. I ask because in my experience, Motherboard based RAID is dependant on software to work properly. I think as this is true hardware RAID the answer will be no, I'm just wondering. Perhaps because this is a low end card...

PS: Forgot to mention, this is Xen 6.0

ahhh, well i have not used the card in question, only been told that they are good quality by some experts.. you have mentioned that is not compatible with the Zen hypervisor.. now i know with ESXi hardware compatibility lists on the VMWare are very important and if its not on the list theres more a chance it wont work.. its not like ram for a mobo.. your better using something in this case that is on the HCL for the Zen hypervisor IMO.. if with Zen you can use software RAID then i would just do that unless you can find a card off the HCL that is in your budget smile.gif

Anyone else have a suggestion, I'd like to hear from anyone who has built a Xen server with non-server grade parts.

What RAID card did you use...

I'd also like anyone to recommend another card. I'm aiming for <$150AUD, don't mind 2nd hand. I need 2 SATA ports, RAID1 and PCI/PCI-E interface.

I'll give it a few more days, then if I've heard nothing I'll pull the trigger on that Adaptec card, it's only $66...

Thanks for that,

But I need a PCI or PCI-E x 4 interface. So those cards won't work.

I've also found these as potential candidates.

Why not just use your onboard RAID? Or better yet see about using your onboard RAID and ESXi 5.0.

AFAIK ESXi does not support fakeRAID.

Can anyone confirm?

The VMWare forums seem to say the same thing...
