Anyone have any tips on cutting out the spot for the I/O ports? Dremel? Angle grinder with a cut-off wheeler? Saw-zaw?

For case modding I always use my Dremel. I think once I used my air cutter, but it was a massacre.

I love this kind of stuff. Old server's seem so BADASS for the amount of money you can get them for. I'd love to build a storage server with a case similar to what you have with the hot swapable bays. Sub'd!
Thats pretty sick, if you can get the hotswap to work with a new board it will make a pretty good server.

I see, Any kind of special wheel / cutter? This metal seems kinda think, Being it's a 90's era industrial grade server.

I know! I thought about leaving it functional, but it's just too old to use :'( I'll probably put the bits on eBay

They are badass! I don't too much care for the new thin, quiet ones. I like em big and loud! And thanks for the sub.

you'd love a Poweredge 2850 with all the fans going at 11k RPM, louder than a circular saw.....i removed 3 of the 5 fans and its still pretty noisy

I'm going to try, but since it uses older SCSI Hot-swap (maybe?) I probably won't be able to.

I see. I do like them loud, But I like mechnical noise. (The harddrives spinning and thinking) more so than fan noise. When that server spun up all it's drive it was music to my ears.

And no progress, Been shopping for boards and looking into a dremel. It snowed here today so I couldn't leave.

I have to admit the sound of drives spinning up does just sound awesome......i may have several 15k scsi drives here attached directly to voltage just to hear the sound they make when spinning up............i need to get out way way more

Haha, I've done that before.

Should stick a dualie board in there so the gutted beast is not totally wasted. I shed a tear in its memory.
