GK110 will be a dual GK104 board, and GK112 is what they're working on for release late this year or early next. Calling the gk104 mid range is pretty ridiculous because the successor is a long ways off and not in ES status yet...it is their high end and flagship for now.

Really?
Well that sucks. But it will be a good chance for AMD to embed itself further into recognition... and maybe even profit enough to hire a few engineers to fix their damn driver quirks ph34r-smiley.gif

Some consider it mid-range because it's a 256 bit card yet performing at AMD's high end 384 bit level. So the architecture is mid-level but being aligned to compete at high end against AMD. High end name for a GK104 where thier current 560 board is what's confusing people.
It can be seen either way as high end competition or mid level architecture and are right.
Nvidia still has room to grow perfomance even further with the 320 bit GK107 and 384 bit GK110 spectrum and will come int the form of a 700 series's. Next GK104 series's you'll see this 680 be a refresh and be called a 760.
I'm sure when AMD comes out with thier 8000 refresh series card Nvidia will be out in time to compete next line in December. Funny because first run of Fermi Nvidia was late and on time with second run 500 line. History seems to be repeating itself with Kepler.
For the record it's been 2 months 9 days since AMD released 7970. wink.gif

doh.gif I should have remembered that, considering it was released on my birthday! Had it in my head it was December.
Oh and btw, when is this card out? Me wants to see a proper review. I have a 570 that needs replacing redface.gif

yes and to play at that res without cpu bottleneck get a 3930K.wink.gif
its really up to you I'm just making a suggestion smile.gif

I was under the impression that after 1920 x 1200, it was more gpu-dependent.

One can view it like you do or why come out that strong if you don't need to. It's just business. Just like AMD pricing this series can't blame them. What ever the reason is why they didn't come out is a moot point when they're going to be competitive still.
A lot of rumors and false info has been dished out for two months now. People have cherry picked what they felt they belived. Nvidia did a great job staying tight lipped and hard launch only. We should all know soon enough.

Well I definitely agree with you in that whatever the reason it really doesn't matter. I'm sure AMD as well will be ready with a new card when refresh time comes along.

One thing I don't agree though is that it made "business sense" to hold the card back. Business sense would tell you to release your best card and crush the competition not release a card similar in performance and price it the same. If the 100 was 1.5X the performance of the 7970 and they could release for 550 that would have made way more "business sense" then what they are doing now. Anyone saying otherwise I hope never works for a place where they have to make business decisions. rolleyes.gif A card that performs exactly the same as the 7970 for 350 dollars would really hurt AMD a c ompany that is already in some deep financial holes.

btw Arizonian I'm not saying you think that but these two arguments usually come together and I've seen hundreds of people saying this.

proof.gif This is an absurd statement. You have no idea how the 7990 or 690 would perform, and we still don't have proof on how the 680 performs.

You also must not notice microstutter because every single dual GPU card i've tested gets nearly double FPS than it's single GPU partner but the single GPU feels smoother and more enjoyable even with the lower framerate. This goes for both NVIDIA and AMD. Based on my experience, dual GPU cards are jokes outside of graphs and benchmarks. In my opinion, 60FPS with microstuttering still feels worse than 30FPS with no microsuttering. I've owned/tested around 7 dual GPU cards to come to this conclusion, in different computers, and I know many here feel the same.

P.D 2 - Sorry my poor english XD

Those SLI results are on ES models using very immature beta drivers. We aren't really sure how far the cards were overclocked because there's really no solid proof on what the stock clocks on the 680 are. Every single picture seems to show them differently, and every article is slightly different. Most are claiming ~1000/6000. We still are not sure if they overclock less, equal, or more than the 7970.

That chart is not a solid indication on how 680s will perform after they are finalized and are running on more mature drivers. There are tons of unknown variables in play and there is absolutely no way to know for sure if the 7990 would beat a 690 or 2x 680s.
