New Build. Any recommendations/fixes/comments?

Thread Starter
Hey guys! This is my first build, along with my second post in OCN. This is my planned set-up for my first build, and was wondering what you guys thought. I'm planning on using this rig for major gaming (SC2, LoL, Crysis 2, etc.) and video editing (Adobe After Effects, maybe some AutoDesk 3DS MAX). Thanks in advance! Oh, and sorry if this is in the wrong section...I wasn't sure where to post for new builds haha...

Processor:
Intel i5-2500k (Planning on OC'ing to >4)

Motherboard:
ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3

Video Card/GPU:
EVGA GTX 550 Ti Superclocked (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=41126&csid=_23)
or
MSI N560GTX-Ti Hawk GeForce GTX 560 Ti (Fermi)

Case:
Cooler Master HAF 912 with window mod, possibly a couple cable management mods

PSU:
Corsair CX600 V2

DDR3 RAM:
Corsair Vengeance 16GB (8 x 2)

HDD:
Seagate Barracuda 1 TB, 7200 RPM

CPU Cooler:
COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 Plus
(I had originally planned to use the Corsair H80)

DVD+/-RW:
Asus 24xDVD±RW Serial ATA Internal OEM Drive

Cooling Fans:
2 x COOLER MASTER R4-L2R-20AC-GP 120mm Blue LED Case Fan (for the Hyper 212)
5 x Logysis Blue LED 120mm Case Fans

SSD:
I'm thinking of throwing in an OCZ 60gb SSD
That's basically it. Wherever there is a slash or an "or" is where I am unsure of what to use. I am trying to get below $900 (although I'm already over it), so any help would be appreciated, whether it be lowering costs or making smarter upgrades. Thanks in advance!

If you are overclocking your processor - I would get the H80, the 212 plus is awesome though but you will overclock higher with the corsair h80.
The price increase for a 750w PSU isn't that great, maybe upgrade for some SLI action?
I would also recommend the 560 vs the 550. The price vs performance ratio is worth it.
The SSD would be awesome for a OS boot drive. Will cut your boot times by a faction of the time than your mechanical drive thumb.gif

Thanks for the comments! Would you have any reccomendations on how I can cut down on the costs? I'm already over $1000 and would like to cut down quite a bit. I want a great gaming computer that I could upgrade in the future. Specifically, could you recommend a different mobo, or maybe an alternative processor?

Oh, also, is the current config compatible?

i live in new zealand but by fishing through newegg/amazon etc

cpu-2500k (ib?)
mobo- ga-z68x-ud3h or something similar (you could go asrock but i either cbf finding any or there arent much stock)
gpu- 560ti hawk>550ti by landslide, or maybe have a look at kepler/7850?
ram - 8gb is plenty, get some 1333/1600mhz 2x4gb sticks from say gskill, crucial, corsair, mushkin, i would stay away from ram modules that are above 1.5v, which most are kingston :|
hdd- samsung f3 spinpoint ooooooooo yeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaahhhhhhhh, or go for anything that has good reviews
cpu cooler - have a look at the noctua nh-u12p se2, i think it's pretty cheap and worth it, or maybe have a look at the antec kuhler 620
drd+/rw- anything that works
cooler fans - anything that works as well
ssd- get something that has good reliabibility, as long as the ocz vertex 3 series i wouldnt really be worried, but ive heard plenty of agility/2/3 and vertex 2 non E series horror stories where the ssd would break from 1-4 weeks after chucking it in the rig, otherwise have a look at crucial ssd's, they are pretty good as well as intel ssd's and corsair ssd'd although they might be a bit pricey

If its gaming the no superclocked 550 is ever going to beat a stock 560. Also yeah h80s nice but yiu could pull >4.4 ghz with the $35 hyper 212 evo..... Better value in my mind

Thanks for the input! That build looks pretty nice. Its also a lowered price. Would that rig be able tp be used in the future? And would it also run extreme games at max settings, no problem?

It's basically a GTX 570 (With one shader cluster disabled), should be more than double the performance of that 550 Ti making it better value. EVGA's changes to their warranty make them a no-brainer for nVidia cards.

if only for gaming, you could cut down on your RAM from 16 to 8 gb and do the upgrade later if you really feel there is a need for more.

for your cooler, hyper 212+ is very good for a budget build, but try out the stock fan that comes with it first. the blade master is really good imo.

If you end up going with a cheaper GPU grab a 460, not the 550, its out preforms it quite a bit.
