External HDD won't work on a mac and PC

Thread Starter
The title says it all really. When my GF was out shopping for an external hdd for her mac, she was told by a person working in the store that if she used her external hdd on a mac, then tried using it on her PC it would get ruined or that I just wouldn't work.

Is this true? I found it hard to believe atleast, and if it's true could anyone care to explain why, or why not?

Mac formatted drives are not useable with pc unless you use special software like macdrive.

you can format ntfs and it will work fine on pc and be readable on mac, but no writing if I remember correctly

Assuming you have SL or newer format the drive in Exfat so you can read/write in both OSx and Windows.
