New Build, Want Advice

Thread Starter
I'm designing a build for one of my friends and am looking for some input from you guys. He's got a budget of $750. It will be used almost exclusively for gaming. He has Windows 7 already. He needs a 1TB hard drive. I see no reason to not get 8Gb of RAM. He likes this case. He wants to have the option later to add a second video card. What we need: CPU, GPU, 1TB hard drive, 8GB RAM, motherboard, and PSU. What do you guys recommend?
CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115072
GPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150561
Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128538
PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817256059
RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226191
HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148725

Not exactly the best components, but it fits your budget @ $748.94. There's also a $10 rebate on the mobo, but I don't include that in the budget. The PSU is 750W to allow you to add a second GPU down the road. You could probably cut costs a little here and go with something cheaper, thus freeing up a better component elsewhere. The HDD and mobo wouldn't be my first choice, but I picked them only to get under budget. The Asrock http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157279 would be a better choice, IMO but its $15 more. I'd pick an F3 HDD but that's $42 more.

The above will get you a decent start. Play around with it and use other sites too as Newegg can be beaten on a lot of these items.

would he be willing to wait upgrade to a 2500k or 3550(IB) later down the road? I'll get to that later...ok lets see, his must haves...$80 for that case and ~$120 for a 1TB HDD. leaves $550.

This is a great PSU for the money(after MIR). And 650w is fine unless you're trying to SLI 2 gtx480s...so that leaves $490 left.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371044

Optical drives are easy, $25. so $465 left.

8GB of the samsung ram $50
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147096

So that leaves $410 for...Mobo, CPU, GPU

i would say def get a z68 board. Lots of ppl like the AsRock extreme3 gen 3 for ~$125
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157271

You could go with a Gigabyte for Asus for a little more...$150-$180
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128498
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131792

that would leave $230-$285 for GPU and CPU.

Here's why i was asking earlier. You're looking at ~$230 for a 560ti. but then you're not left with much for CPU. You could get a 6850 for $130 or a 6870 for $160. and would have enough for say a 2100 or any other variation of the i3. the 2100 is still a very good CPU, only dual cores but has HT.

so yeah...lmk if u have any other thoughts about this...

Where are you buying from?

Consider some of these PSU's. These have enough watts for most mid-end crossfire configurations. Earthwatts for sure if you all won't mind cables w/ no sleeves & not modular.

EA650 $75. $60 after MIR.

Rosewill HIVE 650w $80.

PC P&C 600w $80. $60 after MIR.

Those are all PSU's for assuming a 2nd card one day, or a beefy single card.

Also, talk him out of that case.

that motherboard does not have Heatsinked VRMs which may lead to overheating and issue like that while overclocking as for the GPU watch out its a XFX buddy they have some bad and horror stories about temps, overheating issues and specially when it Comes to RMA rolleyes.gif and another thing that rig is going over the OP's Budget almost 797$ with shipping and before rebates try writing down both the prices i.e. the before MIR and after MIR prices so it more clear to OP thumb.gif

i think numerous people dont realize about VRM heatsinks and how important they are when it comes to overclocking.. but then if the OPs friend doesnt want to overclock then should be fine thumb.gif
