Holy Sweet Gnome Bits what just happened to my PC?.... And games.

Yeah I get it.... Could a Moderator move this to say... "Amd General"?

I don't think there's a quick and easy way to give the full picture so if you aren't a patient person move on to another thread. Just tryin' to help you help me.

Was playing Borderlands when it crashed to desktop. Didn't think anything about it, it's a buggy game. Less than 15 seconds later I got a Blue Screen with no specific errors. Just "Your computer has encountered a fatal error" deal. I restart, and while windows is booting I get the same blue screen. At this point I start sweating thinking my GPU went out. I restart and run system recovery, which comes up with no problems, but when I boot up now I get over a 2 minute system hang in the moment when the black screen with the windows logo transitions to the user selection screen. Full system hang, with no keyboard response or anything.

At first I didn't realize that if I waited it would eventually boot, so I reset a couple times before going into safe mode where I uninstalled the drivers for my GPU and reinstalled. After this I found out I just had to wait, so I went and tried updating everything I could think of while testing my GPU with Furmark and Heaven. No problems with it. I updated, uninstalled, and reinstalled drivers for nearly every hardware component, excluding I believe my hard drive and my dvd burner and motherboard. During one of these reboots I did a run of chkdisk, with no problems found. Being paranoid, I ran system restore again, which said it found disk errors and "fixed" them.

Trying to be thorough I popped in my copy of UBCD and ran three different diagnosis utilities, all of which came up clean. I trust these three utilities more than I do windows so I'm going to judge that my hard drive is fine.

I noticed Microsoft Security essentials wasn't running, and wouldn't turn on. It kept giving me a red-box message about some driver error. I reinstalled it and it now works fine. I tried to run Borderlands again, and got a message box saying "General Protection Fault" with a list of failed attempts to access the .exe for the game, between 10 and 40 of them with no particular pattern. (This has inexplicably fixed itself after a day and a half, all I did was shut down and start up after getting back from work and it was fine. No updates by windows or anything. I checked it religiously while trying various things to straighten out my boot time so I know I just didn't miss it after doing something.) Saints row the third still won't run, giving me the same error type, and neither will Civ V.

My audio was all jacked up when I first got back into windows. My settings were erased and my 5.1 plugs were set bass-ackwards in the software configurator (just onboard realtek). I keep getting funny sounds during shutdown, and when I was locking up during startup my headphones would buzz lightly. Watching video and playing what games still work it's fine however. I strongly suspect the onboard sound, but it's just a guess since I have no freaking clue what all of this random crap has to do with it. I've heard of onboard sound going bad and causing PC's not to start, but I've never heard of them getting ridiculous system hang. If the onboard sound screwing up somehow corrupted Directx11 that would explain the problems with the games, but I don't know how it's possible for a hardware peripheral to screw up what is basically communication drivers for windows and 3rd party software. I still can't start these games if I uninstall my onboard sound, so the arrow is pointing more towards directx than actual hardware malfunction.... I think...

So am I barking up the wrong tree? I really don't want to reinstall windows to find out if it's just directx11 going hinky or my onboard sound. It'd take me over a week to dig everything off of my HDD and get it back on. And so far as I can tell the only way to reinstall directx is to remove and reinstall Windows 7. Am I wrong there also?

Edit: Came home today to another blue screen during startup, and a lot of static on my headphones. Looks like I'm getting a sound card. Any recommendations for 75 and under?

Solved. It was my multi-card reader shorting out and backfeeding dirty electricity into my motherboard. I never used the thing anyways.

Still want to buy a new sound card though, so could a moderator move this to the sound card forum where I will hopefully get good advice?
