Frostbite 2 only supports DX10 and DX11

"Alan Kertz, the Senior Gameplay Designer at DICE shot the rumor down saying “”bull$#!T confirmed. Frostbite 2.0 is the engine running the game on all platforms!!”"

Reminds me of the little evaluation of Crysis 2 before and after the DX11 patch, and how the game renders entirely unnecessary objects in most of the map areas (IIRC, it rendered sea water "beneath" all of the NY area--water that was not static either. I think there were other things as well, but I can't recall off the top of my head).

Technically, Crysis 2 runs on a multiplatform engine that was developed with consoles AND PC in mind.

Still better than a crappy console port though.

Especially if it was delivered with a patch due to community backlash...

I did experience a bit of a drop in frame rate but that was only with my DC U II 560 TI, when I upgraded to a 580 the drop was substantially less and anti-aliasing looked a ton better. Dx11 is good if your gpu can handle it. The differences are almost un-noticeable.

DX11 is great. The problem is no developers ACTUALLY use it. Heck, most don't even use DX10.

Sure, they might have a DX10/11 MODE, and it may have a few additional features, but all they did was copy past the dx9 code into a dx10/11 translator. The only new code is what they added for the "dx10/11 exclusive features".

If they actually wrote a game from the ground up in the DX11 api, it would look better AND run smoother than a dx9 game. That's the whole point of the new API in the first place - to allow greater efficiency and provide standardization for new technologies (which translate into new effects ie tessellation).

As for the question of if I believe that this will become the norm... it already has. ALMOST all pc games in the last 5 or 6 years have been dumbed down to console standards. Publishers don't care about PC. It's a small, not particularly profitable market. They would rather make a game for xbox that will sell like crazy, and then spend an additional $100 bucks porting/forking it for PC to collect a few thousand dollars off the odd remnant PC gamer.

Is it going to end? Nope, not until PC gamers make enough of a fuss about it and stop rolling over and making excuses for the developers/publishers to get away with this kind of behavior. Even then, most big publishers will simply choose to go console exclusive rather than invest heavily into the low profit PC market unless people stop blindly buying shoddy cookie cutter console games for 6 year old consoles.

Haha, totally.

I found the analysis I was talking about! Here it is: http://techreport.com/articles.x/21404/2

OP, it doesn't really discuss the perceived quality differences between 9 and 11, but it definitely showcase the odd way in which they implemented things. smile.gif
