Rig Modification Suggestions? - Page 3

Im not real expeirianced at overclocking gpus, done small ones for clients and i find best results when you make the gous memory- overclock #1

For $600 this is what i would do:

Buy a cooler, hyper 212 evo or similur-$35 (i wouldnt get a new board- just dont push it too much, maybe 4.2ghz and if you think you need more- well then buy a new board latter)

Buy a second 6950. Im not sure of the cost, i think there like $250?

Buy and ssd. Crutial m4 128gb cost $200 and makes a great boot drive.

(because youll need one) a new psu. I dought 650watts is going to power an overclocked 81xx and two 6950s. Maybe a good 850watt one ~$150

Thats $635

i agree with jrl, except the money for the ssd can be used for a new motherboard that Schmuckley recommended.

The motherboard is a priority because you said you want to overclock your 8120. That is the only way.

any left over can be for a better cooler to handle higher clocks.

If I get a second 6950, I would need a new board. The 970 doesn't support Crossfire. Only one DDR5 slot.

I will definitely consider everything though. But ya I would like to save on the SSD. My only issue atm is that the XFX Dual Fan 6950 2 GB isn't manufactured anymore, so it won't be as easy as getting a 7950 or something. But then again, I don't have a lot to spend atm tongue.gif

Which brand of PSU do you guys suggest (and is bang for my buck)? I'm not looking to OC my CPU to 5 Ghz or anything, but seeing that most games are rather CPU heavy today, I would like to increase my performance. 4.1 - 4.2 sounds about good.

Another thing (and I really appreciate the help everyone), does Crossfire really make a difference? I heard that it all depends on CPU and motherboard not bottlenecking. Would I be able to get high performance off of two 6950's? Or should I maybe wait till I get paid to buy a 7950? I may be able to squeeze a few extra hundred bucks out. Maybe.....

it does not have to be the same brand gpu so long as it is a 2GB. of course a good brand like Sapphire maybe or MSI. but i recommend holding off with this.

Go for a Sabertooth motherboard and an excellent cpu cooler first. Overclocking your cpu and gpu might satisfy your game play.

The Sabertooth is about $190 in egg. check other stores. also check the ocn market. this time many are selling their component to buy new ones. Just make sure to ask the condition of the product.

Remember. another 6950 might require upgrading your psu, whereas a 7950 won't.

If I get a second 6950, do I have to stay with the same brand? Or can I mix XFX and Sapphire?

Or would this work? The reason I ask is that my model is the dual fan model and I don't know if that makes a difference or not.

So I should go with the Sabertooth over the Crosshair V? Sounds good to me.

That's what I also thought on the GPU's as well. I have always preferred single GPU configs.

Now what brand PSU should I get and the size should be 850 Watts right?

No you dont need to stay with the same brand. Mixing xfx and saphire is fine, just make sure there the 2gb versions.

you don't need a new psu unless you've made up your mind to crossfire.

new mobo and powerful cpu cooler first like i said earlier.

oc the cpu/gpu and play. if not satisfied, then you go to plan b - buy new gpu.

7950 - use the same psu
or 6950 - upgrade psu 850w 80 plus cert.
