Help with deciding on what to get.

Hi guys,

I would like to hear your thoughts about my situation. I’m thinking of upgrading my CPU+Mobo and I think I'll go Intel this time around but I’m currently stuck on deciding what cpu and mobo to buy. Current budget is $470 but can be extended if my uncle contributes.

These are the prices as of now here in the Philippines.
Option 1:
i7 2600k + SS QCK freebie = $315
Asrock z68 Extreme 3 Gen 3 = $147
Total = $462

Option 2:
i5 2500k = $222
Maximus IV Gene-Z Gen 3.0 = $241
Total = $463

Option 3:
i5 3570k = more or less $240-$250 when IB launches here.
Mobo = rest of the budget.

Is ivy bridge worth waiting if what I’m doing is mainly play games? Will I notice an increase in performance in doing so?(waiting for ivy bridge that is) By the way sorry for my grammar and any other suggestions are welcome.

Thanks OCN! biggrin.gif

1.i wouldnt wait for ivy unless your use intragrated graphics or overly concerned about power use
2. If gaming is all you do, the i7 2600k is not worth the money over the i5 2500k. Only video editing, encoding and megatasking benifite from the i7s main differance: hyper threading
3. The asus maximus is overkill

1. Well the said improved integrated graphics(HD4000) might be of help to me if I need to RMA my card or sell it as it can hold me over while waiting. About the power consumption, I know the difference is negligible but the lesser the better because I'm not the one paying for our electric consumption and I would like to decrease the burden as much as possible.

2. Ok noted but I included the 2600k for future proofing but I guess it is not really needed.

3. I am keen on aesthetics and the ROG board has taken my interest.

Ok power and resell yes but do you really want to wait 4months for it?

The 2500k  will do well for 3years minimum before you need to replace.
Thou a 2600k might last longer you'll probably swap it before that matters.

If you want to spend extra on that board go ahead. Its still a great board, its just you probably wont use any of the things that make it better then the asrock extreme one. But hey, if its that important go ahead

I would go for option 2. The 2500k is an amazing chip and if you're only playing games you don't need the hyperthreading that comes with the 2600k because no games use hyperthreading as of now. If you don't render videos or do anything graphics wise then it is a waste of money to get the chip with hyperthreading since you wont be using it and the 2500k and 2600k perform the same in all games. Then you can use the extra money and get the sick asus board smile.gif

The Asus maximus is an amazing board as well so I think option 2 is the way to go

Thanks for the replies I'll disregard option 1 now thumb.gif. Do you guys think that there will be a price drop on 2500k+MIVG-Z Gen 3 once Ivy Bridge launches?

I'd go for option 3 personally. Ivy is rumored to be released in late April. Couldn't hurt to wait that one extra month to see. Worst case scenario you could pick up a used 2500k that's a proven chip for cheap at that point. wink.gif

There's also option 4 (not listed). Get a 3820 with a good LGA 2011 board. smile.gif That wouldn't be too bad of an idea either.

Yes, I'm not that really itching to upgrade it's just that I don't want to regret when 3570k launches it will have the same performance as 2500k but who knows I might be wrong. About the 4th option, I don't think I can afford to have that as a 3820 here costs $326 plus the expensive x79 mobos and quad channel ram. frown.gif

You were considering a 2600k + board. The 3820 with a cheaper (but good) 2011 board is roughly the same cost....

And you don't NEED quad channel RAM. You could still use it just fine with dual channel. Your sig rig shows you have 4x2GB of Ripjaws....that's Quad channel right there. wink.gif

Cheapest decent x79 board(Asrock x79 Extreme 3) I could find here costs $245 and add the $326 i7 3820 that will be $571 and that's way over my budget even if my uncle contributes so it's not really feasible thanks for the suggestion though. smile.gif

EDIT:
I just saw the preview of i5 3570k and I might just wait for it. Thanks for the help guys. thumb.gif
