My Hard Drive(s) are Failing?

Thread Starter
I bought a Western Digital Caviar Blue almost exactly two years ago for my computer. Recently though, my computer has been hanging a lot, from my web browser to just windows explorer it will do it at random times. Downloading torrents will give me CRC errors every once in a while, and my computer constantly demands a disk check. From what it seems like, my hard drives are failing. BTW: I've got two of these drives, I bought one two years ago and bought another a year ago. I've had a RAID 0 setup since then.

My question for you guys then is: What would you do in my situation? It seems unlikely my hard drives would fail this fast, so is it possible there's an error in reporting? Could S.M.A.R.T. info help you guys out? Will my warranty cover this?

Thanks in advance.

Run HDTune. Also, I believe there is a Western Digital HDD program that checks for errors as well.

You need to run some disk diagnostic tools. It's not uncommon for drives to fail, especially lower-end drives like the blues. Your warranty will cover it. You should back up your data, find out which drive is causing the problems, and warranty it.

Seems like your hard drive is going bad....back up your stuff before it does completely...

and here is the link for the HD Status Check:

I don't quite understand what to do with the program? I ran a "error scan" and it came back looking good.

I booted via the CD and got an error saying hard drive was not found. I don't know what to do as of now.

I wouldn't call them lower end drives. They're more mainstream (mid-level) stuff. From what I recall, until Western Digital launched the colors as branding, some of what are now Blue drives were perhaps some of the faster drives a few years back.

That being said, I've found them pretty reliable. I got two 320GB AAKS (Caviar SE) drives in late 2007, two 640GB AAKS (Caviar SE) drives perhaps in 2008 sometime, and two more 640GB AAKS drives after that (again, Caviar SE drives, but they were labeled/calling them Caviar Blue now), and all still work fine. The two 320GB drives are in two different PCs, while the four 640GB drives are in my own PC. That's not counting five or six other older Western Digital Caviar drives (20GB, 40GB, and 80GB) that all still work. Everyone has different experiences though.

I would run Western Digital's diagnostics and see what they say. It does sound like it could be failing though.

Has this persisted across OS installs? It's one way to narrow that out of the equation.

I can't run the Dignaostic tool that was linked above, when I boot from it I get a message saying "no hard drives found".

I started up my computer today, and it did its usual disk check. It deleted probably a thousand file entries or some ****, and now my computer hangs even more than it did before. The biggest problem is my web browser, it freezes for a minute every time I click it. Interstingly, programs like mIRC never freeze. My games too, they don't seem to freeze.

Anyways, I'll probably try an OS re install soon... I guess that's my last hope other than replacing the drives

Also it might be interesting to note that the longer I'm on my computer, the less hangs I face. For example, when I first start up my computer I hang every other second. As time goes on I hang every other minute, and after 5 or 6 hours I don't hang at all. It's like my computer has no problems to begin with.

I'm no expert but i had this exact problem a few year's back. Apon boot i had a chkdisc at first used HDTune no errors....cool! Few days later same thing. Eventually it was to a point where that was as far as i could get.

I think right now because your drive warmed up it would b ok for now. However, IMO your drive is dieing....get your data while you can.
