Anyone tried to reflow a 5850?

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I have a friend who has an MSI 5850 where the fan died on them and now the video card is dead with nothing on the screen. Do you think a reflow of the GPU will work? Any success stories?

I tried to reflow a 4850 but with no success but have reflowed a few GPU's on laptop motherboards with success.

Well you can bake it which tends to work as well unless your talking about reballing the chip to the PCB. Some times its just broke from to much heat and caused damaged some where else.

shouldnt you bake for 10 minutes? also preheat the oven for 10 minutes before starting the bake.
Then let the card cool for an hour before you test it.

Yeah I preheated the oven to 200C and then stuck it in for 3mins, but ill try what you said. Do you know anyone who has fixed their gpu with this method? The cause of death was severe overclocking and overvolting...Ran it fine on stock for around 8 months. Then i unlocked the voltage control and started overclocking so went and bought the Thermalright Shaman, which did a great job in keeping core temps low. However, the cooler had no VRM cooling whatsoever. So GPU-Z showed the VDDCs were at ~110C for around 2 months of moderate gaming and benchmarking, before it kicked the bucket. What exactly does the baking/reflowing fix? The memory or core?(which i believe are both fine) or the little shiny mirror things they call VRMs, which is what I think got fried.
