So hello guys,

At the moment i've just got an idea, i don't know how realistic this is, but..
I'd like to make a server to share a printer, to share some network storage and to stream music/movies.

Seeing as i'm a student i can get Windows Server 2008 R2 (and non-R2 for free). - Yes i can grab both but only once for each..

So that's the software side mostly sorted! thumb.gif

I can get a free entire PC, but it's not too great.. I have no idea on what specifications i'd require do to what i want.
I could get a Pentium 4 for sure, i could also get one with HT aswell. I also have a slight possibility to wait and get a "Dell" that's a dual core.. Probably 2 for free, seeing as i have a good friend that works for the Education dept... (They're upgrading a classroom to quads i bet).

So if they actually "throw away" those Dell's, i'll grab 2x and part them out for RAM and HDD's.

As for the HDD's i've got a 640GB Green in my main rig that i'd use for media files to stream.. That same "Friend" has 4x 80GB Sata HDD's to give to me. So that will help (for backups of more important data aswell).

I'd also have a bit-torrent client on there, as i share files with friends from the other side of Tasmania. thumb.gif

Oh and i also have a 24 port switch the same friend is giving me, i might see if i can swap another friend for his 8 port switch!
It's a Gigabit switch, so essentially it should be lag free. It just needs a clean out and maybe a small mod with a few fans!

There's only one or two things left.. Is there a way to stream music on an Android Device?

How hard would it be to essentially install a 25m Ethernet cable in the roof myself? - Or under the house... (So i can get a Ethernet cable to the TV for streaming).

I know this sounds crazy, but it's going to cost me essentially nothing. (well maybe $25 of cables). Because i already have most of the assests i require or can easily get hold of them..

I'm also looking into a Dual Xeon 2.8GHz rackmount server for $150AUD+. Don't think i'm going that hardcore with the server thing yet though!

My main idea was to get a P4 to practice school based assesments on it, but i found myself liking the idea more and more! thumb.gif

EDIT: Would use remote desktop over LAN to access it, i'd also setup teamviewer 3 if i was away from home!

EDIT: I could also cycle all my old PC parts if this actually takes off to be of use! tongue.gif

Any help/Input is greatly appreciated big time!

Cheers,
-Matt
