[Bloomberg] Apple to Pay Dividend, Buy Back Stock to Return Some of Its Cash - Page 2

I can see why people would poke fun at Apple for basically doing the same thing over and over, but to seriously say they don't do R&D is absurd. Any company that puts out tech products needs lots of R&D.

They had lots of r&d, back in 07.

Besides, surely you remember the whole "your holding it wrong" thing? Yeah, that really happened.

It seems true that their R&D is a joke compared to other tech companies of similar size; the quantity and breadth at least.

In 2011, Apple spent $2.429B in R&D: http://files.shareholder.com/downloads/AAPL/1739092194x0xS1193125-11-282113/320193/filing.pdf

If you think Apple does not do R&D... you have no idea how products are developed or companies work. Being the case that you are making uninformed decisions in the face of facts, you by definition are a "fan boy".

Stock buy backs are good for stock holders... it increases the value of their shares.

...you base this on what?

Apple spends a lot of interfaces, software, product design, chip designs, and pushing/forming their standards.

Yeah, they do spend a lot pushing their "standards", and they do spend a whole lot on design also.

Their R&D doesn't change the world in a positive manner. It's not new tech that were all going to be enjoying in the future because of its's merits to society. You wanna take a guess as to how much of the R&D was devoted to Siri?

Their R&D compared to their revenue, is a joke.

Apple interfaces have influence the world for the last 20 years.
Apple iPhone full touchscreen has defined the smartphone.
Apple's integrated platforms, application store, and user-first approach has influence software design.
Apple has demonstrated that aesthetics and approachability matter... a lot.

The amount you spend on R&D alone does not matter.... it is the return on investment that is important.

Apple spends a lot of interfaces, software, product design, chip designs, and pushing/forming their standards.

The interface and software hasn't ever really changed. They added a notification bar and wallpapers over the past couple years.

Product design, while looks good, has proved to be not very durable.

Chip design comes from a company called Intrinsity that collaborated with Samsung (who also produces the chips) to design them. Apple bought them less than 2 years ago.

As far as standards go, they have none. I'm sorry if I have offended you to the point of throwing the "fan boy" term around, but as a consumer, I see the end result and I got to tell ya, my fourth gen ipod touch with and before ios 5 is about 98% the same as the original ipod touch I had previous. Not exactly 2.5 billion dollars worth of growth over the years to justify what little changes took place, let alone in 2011 by itself.

Believe it or not making money has no intrinsic value. Money spent on R&D matters much more to humanity then how much return they get on their investment.

So now it doesn't matter that they don't spend beans on R&D because they make lots of money? Nice try at deflecting the argument.

Apple is a parasite.

One could try to argue that they are solely responsible for smartphone and tablets but it simply isn't true.

That chart doesn't take into consideration "fads", "trends", or product diversity. They make one product in different forms. Again, unless they have gold plated toilets in the employee bathrooms, where does that money go?

This. What have they ever truly created? At least I made an awesome new mouse trap back in 6th grade. They haven't even done that! tongue.gif

Do I shame Sharp for creating a better TV despite the fact that they didn't create THE modern day television?

A good product is a good product. Objectively, Apple produces at least good (if not fantastic) products.
