Laptop for le Girlfriend

What is your maximum budget?
U$1200

What country are you in?
Taiwan

What will be the uses of this laptop?
Web browsing, youtube, media and maybe some CAD work in the future.

Do you have brand loyalty or care which brands we select for you?
Nope

What screen size do you require?
13". Not much smaller or bigger as she has to be able to carry it around and it has to be big enough to watch series on.

What screen resolution do you require?
1366x768 is fine, but higher is better I guess.

Are you looking to buy NEW or would refurbished/recertified/used be okay?
NEW.

How long should the battery last? (Under optimal conditions, no movies/games/heavy internet)
Doesn't matter much, but 5h on movies would be nice.

What games would you like to play with your laptop? And on what settings?
She doesn't really play games, but if she did it wouldn't be anything too demanding.

What operating system do you need? (if any)
Windows.

Is there a certain style of laptop you want? (aluminum, black, gaming, etc.)
She wants a nice looking laptop. I'm trying to shy her away from getting a Macbook so looks are huge.

How much hard drive space do you need?
>320GB if no USB3.0 or eSATA. Not much space at all if there is.

Do you need any special hardware? (blue ray, webcam, specialty ports, etc.)
Webcam of course, USB 3.0 would be nice as would eSATA.

Is there anything else we need to know?
She wants a Macbook, but I really want her to get a PC (to save all the headaches I'm gonna get if she does go with a Macbook). Preferrably it'd be a light, 13" laptop she'd carry around for school and home use. She does not game on the PC so specs don't matter that much. She might need to use some engineering software so just needs something that can handle that.

I've been looking at the Asus Zenbooks and they look nice, but 11" screen is too small.

I just realized they have 13" models too. What's their performance like compared to Macbook Pro's? Also, any other suggestions?

You are going to spend 1200 USD on a 13'' netbook?

Unnecessary for surf and media.

As for a recommendation, asus makes pretty quality laptops/netbooks so you can go with zenbook.
My choice would be to get the one she will like physically or the cheapest one.
So if she likes zenbook by it's looks then i guess it's ok.
Looks are all that matters to (most of) the female gender.

Sony Vaio SA 13.3". Standard-voltage i5, 1600x900 resolution, backlit keyboard, AMD 6630M graphics (much faster than Intel HD 3000; not the greatest but a good boost for engineering software), about 1" thick, 3.7 pounds. Better than a Macbook Pro 13 in most aspects, and halfway between Ultrabook and standard 13" laptop weight.

For an Ultrabook, I'd go with the Toshiba Portege Z835 because it has a backlit keyboard, and it's one of the lightest Ultrabooks. Asus Zenbook with 1600x900 screen isn't a bad choice but it seems to have a lot of minor issues/annoyances.

I think she'll end up with the Zenbook or Vaio S series. She seems to like the design (doesn't really love it though). If it's a tossup I'm telling her to get the Vaio.
