AMD Athlonx X2 AM2 VS AMD Athlon X2 AM3

Thread Starter
Has title states, I have two CPUs. One is an AMD Athlon X2 240 2.80Ghz (Signature) and I was just given a working AMD Athlon X2 220 2.80Ghz But it's an AM3 socket. My question is... What are the differences between an AM2 and an AM3? Will my X2 AM2 240 perform better than the X2 AM3 220? Or will it be the same?

And what's this about "Unlocking cores" on AMD CPUs? Is it some kind of silly internet meme / joke I don't get? Or is it real? What CPU(s) can it be done with?

Oh, it's real. Some CPUs can be unlocked. Check google for a list of unlockable CPUs.
Also, I'm pretty sure you got something wrong. There is no Athlon x2 240 CPU. It has to be Athlon II. In that case, it 100% is AM3 too.

So both CPUs are Athlon II x2, both are AM3. In that case, the 240 is faster than the 220 due to larger cache, but the 220 may unlock to tri- or quad-core.

Both the processor you owned and the one you received are AM3 processors.

Neither the 220 nor the 240 can unlock, as they are based off a native dual-core design. (i.e. They aren't a quad/hexa-core processor with cores disabled.)

The 240 has twice the L2 cache of the 220, so it will be slightly faster.

No, I'm pretty sure it's an X2 240. and it's AM2. Because the motherboard it came off Clearly says AM2 on the CPU socket.

That's odd.. I'm pretty sure the one from my Dell was an X2 AM2....

Interesting. How hard is it to "Unlock" cores? Will it damage anything? Do I need a special board?

The CPU is AM3 socket, I'm telling you smile.gif I bet a goat on it smile.gif

Just AM3 CPUs work fine on AM2 mobos. And yes, you need a special AM3 mobo with BIOS that supports unlocking in order to unlock.
Nearly all ASUS, AsRock and Gigabyte AM3 mobos support that.

Well I bought and received my ASrock A770DE+ board today. Will it work with that?

No, unfortunatelly you can't unlock with that. But you will see performance increase anyway smile.gif

Ah, Bummer. So should I go for the 220 or 240? The board literally just got shipped to my house.

Since you can't unlock - 240 for sure. Larger cache, makes a difference smile.gif
