Another 6870 in CrossfireX or sell and single GTX 600 series?

Hi all smile.gif

I'm stuck..I dunno what I have to do with this..doh.gif

Here's the situation:

My current board is an ASRock budget board (ASRock 880GMH/U3S3) with only one pci express slot and a low quality VRM setup. I've overclocked my CPU a bit and got it stable by alot of tweaking. BUT..I'm afraid my board will frie and maybe take other componements with it.

So..since I recieved 300euro (wich is quite a lot of money for me since i'm still a student) I was thinking about spending it on a sabertooth mobo and another 6870. This way I will be able to overclock the cpu a bit further (and safe!) and install another GPU.

Now some guys say that my best move would be not to buy a new mobo and 6870 but keep my current mobo, sell my 6870 and buy a GTX 600 series card when it comes out.

Now when I do a little math:

A: 300€ + 100€ (from selled 6870) = plusminus 400€ to spend on GTX 600 GPU

B: 135€ (for ASUS Sabretooth mobo) + 150€ (for second 6870) = 285€ for steady mobo with steady overclock and 6870 crosfireX.

What GTX 600 gpu can i get for +-400 € and will it outperform dual 6870's? But what will happen to my board then? it's on maximum stress with my 400mhz overclock and I have no intention to go back to stock speeds.

Or should I stick with decision B and go for the mobo and seconds 6870?

I hope some master here can clear things up for me thumbsupsmiley.png

Thanks on advantage

I always advocate for going with the single fastest card you can reasonably afford. With 1GB of VRAM, the 6870's are definitely a no go for me. GTX 670/670Ti/660 or whatever you can reasonably afford is what I would go with.

go for better mobo and an extra 6870. Remeber ur mobo is the thing holding all ur parts together. biggrin.gif and plus sabertooth 990fx OCs like a beast hence the name sabertooth biggrin.gif

I would get much of an overclock. right know it's overclock from 3.4ghz to 3.8ghz. The max a 965be can achieve on air is about 4.1-4.2 ghz

No, it wouldn't. In crossfire and SLI, vram from the second card does nothing. Even if you got a 2GB 6870 for CF, it would use 1GB because it makes sure that each card is capable of what the other is. Same thing if you have an OC'd card from factory and a reference card, the OC'd will downclock to factory to mirror the other, IIRC.
