Lucked out, found an AWESOME pc in the trash! New HTPC Build! - Page 2

Wow impressive find, those are some nice components. Did it still have the original OS on it too? I'm guessing they junked it because of the slow laptop hard drive and an old bogged down Windows install.

I found an old Gateway P4 all-in-one someone was tossing and it had online tax returns on it with their social security numbers and personal pictures. They are lucky that it fell in the hands of an honest person otherwise it would be pretty easy to do some not very nice stuff with that info. People do the stupidest things. I never sell a hard drive unless I secure erase it but the average computer use doesn't know this.

Never gone trash diving? It's fun and you never know what you'll find. I found an old 52" flat panel tv out behind the shopping center here, cleaned it up and sold it for $100. Tons of computers which are easily cleaned and sold on Craigslist for $30-50 for old OEM ones, and upwards of $100 for newer ones. An hours worth of digging in the trash can normally get you more than a day at work working for $10-15/hour.

That makes more sense, I thought it was strange it had a laptop drive. Congrats again, I love stories like these. It's fun to find free or cheap stuff that's worth a lot more.thumb.gif

Went to a small 2nd hand store yesterday. Kept seeing the sign in the window. "$99 COMPUTERS!" I was thinking: What could that have any good for $99??
All computers have handwritten labels. Looks like they just did a basic once over to see what was in them but no other research.

Lo and behold. I find a Q6600 rig with 4GB of RAM and a GTS450 sitting in there for $99!!! I did not have the cash on me right then so I rearranged the shelf so it would be all the way in the back and out of site. I am going back this next week in hopes that it will still be there.

Someone does not know what they have there. Gonna have to keep going back. Maybe I will find something really nice! But gotta get this Q6600 rig first!
