I was under the impression that it would just work with one of the included mounting brackets. The MCP82 claims it works on ALL AMD cards, and most NVIDIA cards. If it's true that this doesn't even work with the GTX 680 or even the 7970 (after 3 months!), then I might not even watercool the GPU.
I'm tired of putting thought into this, and I plan to only have the 680 until the next single GPU card (780?). If the block won't work with that card then I have to constantly tear down my loop and air cool it until they have a block that works, then rebuild my loop. That's way to much hassel. frown.gif


So far, I have only used the MCW82 on the GTX 470. If there is anyone out there with a 7970 and a MCW82, let us know. I based the info on this thread I found while I was doing some research:

Sigh this is just fustrating. It seems there's no way to future proof a watercooling build that has a GPU in the loop. I really just don't know what to do now.. i'm not willing to tear down my loop everytime I upgrade my GPU, just to air cool to GPU for ~3 months before redoing my loop after a block comes out.

Universal blocks are suppose to fix this.. but 3 months later the MCW82 doesn't work with the 7970, 100% correctly? That's not very universal. frown.gif

There's also people on there claiming the VRMs get so hot on the 7970 you can't just cool them with little heatsinks.. I assume the GTX 680 will be not much different. No matter what I try it just seems like adding my GPU to my loop is a headache i'm not willing to deal with.

I would email Swiftech's technical engs/support on this one so you don't waste 100+ for incompatible blocks.

They are "universal" in the sense that they can keep adding new mounting systems to new cards. So far, no compatibility with any of the new generation cards.

So basically if you upgrade your GPU everytime a new GPU launches, you are out of luck. You can buy the card, tear your loop down and rebuild it while air cooling the card, then rebuild the loop 1-3 months later when these blocks/mounting brackets come out. The other option is waiting 1-3 months before buying a card. The more I look at it, the more it seems i'm not willing to do this.. seems like a major headache because I upgrade so much.

It's a shame because my pump and radiator are complete overkill for just the CPU.

Not sure, the RASA blocks are pretty restrictive though. For a single card, should be fine.

If the MCW82 aren't compatible, check EK's, Rasa's Universal blocks. 

 

Edit:  Seems like EK is better updating their compatibility. They are already compatible with the 7970. No info on the GTX 680 but it appears to be on its way soon.

The MCW82 will work just fine with 7900 series, it's cooling my Gigabyte 7950 right now. All I had to do was place a copper shim between the core and the waterblock because of the shim that surrounds the core. I bought it from FrozenCPU, and it's made by EK. Other than needing the shim, it screwed right on, so hopefully it'll be just as easy on my GTX 680 arriving on Monday thumb.gif The block came with an Nvidia mounting kit as well so we'll see if it's needed at all.

Also, in case you're wondering about my choice of heatsinks, I bought a pack of these low profile sinks for the RAM (low profile to avoid any clearance issues with block barbs, though I could've gone full sized), and these sinks for VRM's. I ended up buying more of the low profile sinks to use on VRM since they're bunched so closely together. Anyway, it's a mixture of both sinks covering VRM's, and they top out around 70C at load, on my 7950.

Right now it's pointless to watercool these. You can keep them under 70C and can't even hear the fan. I got my max possible OC on air and it's still under 70C. Sadly, my max possible OC isn't every good though. About 13%..

Damn, sorry to hear that. Can you not control the volts at all? 70C seems pretty great though on air. What's the max temps for those anyways?

I'd imagine though the volt issue should be addressed soon I would imagine, should be a simple software update.
