This is crazy! You can't return a movie because you didn't like the ending. If you could do this, then I want my $10 back from Star Wars episode 1.

It is great that Amazon has a generous return program, but all Amazon customers pay for it in the end with higher prices.

The problem here is, they were not given anything, they spent their money on a game that did not - according to the fans, I've never played a single Mass Effect game - fulfill the promises outlined by the makers of the game throughout many interviews (there is a forum post about that).

So, from a legal standpoint, it doesn't really matter if the ending is good or bad, what matters is if they got what they paid for. It seems they didn't.

If the makers of the game have every right to change the game, you can't blame the consumers to claim the right to change their minds about keeping a game that does not fulfill the promises that were made.

In the case of pre-orders I think this is fully justifiable, the makers of the game led the consumers on a false premise to get sales. After the game has been out and a fair amount of reviews have been published however, I think the case wouldn't stand in court because then the consumer should have informed him/herself before buying. But when it comes to pre-orders, I think that it would stand a fair chance of holding up in court, it's a matter of false advertising.

I don't see how it having an ending people don't like or day 1 DLC as being a broken product.

Would you return a DVD if you thought it wasn't funny? Hell no. I sure as heck wouldn't grant you a refund.


That said, I'm still happy about this. Developers/publishers have gotten away with far too much lately. Unlike poor pricing schemes or endings that don't match fanfic favorites, SOME of their practices really ARE "defective".

They don't put the ending on the back cover, or anything like that. But as has been said earlier, what was promised or what was said, didn't really turn out to be true.

Yeah, so some of those choices involve having the previous games on PC and the part about you liking the endings is pure speculation, but is that really any different from ANY press release for.. well.. ANYTHING?

Really, there are much worse things in the game industry than being disappointed that an ending didn't turn out the way you had imagined or the way some 12 year old's fanfic on deviant art said it would. I'm not saying that you shouldn't complain, I'm just suggesting that gamers pick their battles and actually pursue things that matter first.

Developers/publishers won't change overnight, prioritize the messages you want to send them.

I returned Skyrim for a full refund. I was playing the game just fine until they started patching it, then my performance tanked and my saved game got corrupt. Amazon took it back no questions asked and it's still on my STEAM account. I hope they don't sell it as a used copy because it's not going to work for whoever buys it, and no I don't still play it. I got so frustrated trying to get it working only to have another patch come out and render my fixes/mods useless that I just don't care about it anymore.
