TOKYO, Oct 10 (Reuters) - Japanese chip maker NEC Electronics Corp. (6723.T: Quote, NEWS, Research) said on Tuesday it began shipping a chip compatible with both Blu-ray and HD DVD formats in next-generation DVDs, bridging a format war splitting the electronics industry in two.

If other hybrid technology is developed, the new chip could lower costs to build dual-format players, helping consumers and the movie industry sidestep the rivalry between the two opposing camps.

I saw this coming when I went to Toshiba's first convention for HD DVD (before Sony's Bluray convention). My coworkers and I were saying how it'd be great if someone did this.

Except I expected some kind of legal or copyright issues to arise. Apparently not.

Well, they still don't have the problem solved of a laser to read both.......so they would have to package 2 lasers in there I guess.........I just don't see the industry supporting 2 formats.......even if they sell a player that reads both, that still means they will have to pay to stamp oout 2 different kinds of movies....and the stores will have to find a way to stock both formats in proper quantities.........
