power supply question

Thread Starter
my question is, is my 650w corsair psu enough for my gtx 570? i cannot get over 65 fps no matter if i even overclock the gpu to 900/1800 mhz. so i keep it at stock 797mhz, and no change either way. is there a way i can check to see if its using the right amount of power or if it needs more?

The power supply is more than adequate for a 570, without any context in regards to what your getting frame rate wise in what I am going to guess it is just the best your system can push to the screen.

Your problem is not the PSU, but the CPU. The graphics card is most likely being bottlenecked by that CPU.

What game are you running ? 65 fps is not bad in any case, even if the CPU is bottlenecking the GPU.

Check my link in the sig to have CPU and GPU usage along with FPS in-game so you can be sure.

The Phenom II is actually faster clock for clock than the Bulldozer, even though it doesn't have all the latest instructions (which current games don't use) and is built with 45 nm technology instead of 32 nm.

You can always overclock it. You should be able to get more than 4.5 Ghz out of it.

Neither, given that you already purchased it, overclock the FX-8120. It comes with an unlocked multiplier, so you can easily overclock it. It's very possible that you can actually get it to 4 Ghz at stock voltage. See how it goes, maybe you'll be happy with the performance.

In any case, hold on for the Piledriver CPUs later this year. The Phenom II X4 960T and X6 1090T are good CPUs, but you won't be able to overclock them so much given that they are made using 45 nm technology. They would be interesting alternatives if you hadn't already bought the FX-8120. If you find someone willing to do a trade or a trade plus cash, that might be an option, otherwise the best you should do right now is overclock it.

i have overclocked it to 41.ghz on air with just little bumps to vcore and NB voltage. i own both the 4100 and 8120, the 4100 runs cooler cause its 95w and not 125w. but which one would do me better in gaming, since i know i may be able to OC the 4100 past 4.1ghz... and does the fx series bottleneck my gxt570, im only getting round 65-70 fps.

In which game are you getting those numbers ? If it's BF3, that is actually very good and AMD's Bulldozer does well in that game. I would stay with the FX-8120 because newer games use more cores and you also benefit when doing video encoding. But in the end it all depends on what games you play the most. Some new games like Skyrim are still more optimized to take advantage of dual core CPUs, in which case the higher clocks you can get with the FX-4100 are better.
