Samsung 830 SSD slower in AHCI mode than in IDE mode ?

Thread Starter
I recently upgraded to a Samsung 830 SSD. Although in AS SSD Benchmark it gets way way better results in AHCI mode (see below) than it does in IDE mode, when it comes to real world performance, I notice that my system feels slower, and I get stutters/glitches in VLC when it's playing a video. Along with that, copying from HDD to USB3 HDD (and therefore unrelated to the SSD I would think) takes much longer. My GoodSync copies were averaging only 25MB/s when in AHCI mode (compared to 85+ MB/s in IDE mode). This was observed when copying 50GB or so from my E: HDD to my backup drive which is USB3/Sata6.

Here is the AS SSD result in AHCI mode and as you can see is good (I've seen better, but it's good enough).

I've ran the optimization tools that come with Samsung Magician. I've got the "02" firmware on the SSD. Apparently the "03" doesn't bring any performance gains, only makes firmware updates more seamless. So updating the firmware (and risking a brick) just so that updating the firmware goes more easily seems rather pointless. When there's an "04" that brings real change, then it might be worth doing.

Here is my WEI report - it also looks great. Can't complain about 7.9 on disk performance.

Any thoughts about why my system doesn't appear to run as efficiently with AHCI, despite the above all seeming to be perfect? I wonder if I've changed all the BIOS settings I need to. I only changed one setting from IDE to AHCI as shown below. Should anything else be changed? I see something there about IDE native mode on ports 0-3 (don't know what that means) and also eSata.

I do notice that since changing to AHCI, my boot up now shows this (which seems to imply that I couldn't use USB boot device, not that I want to).

Did you or have you installed your intel rapid storage drivers?

Downloading it. I didn't think I needed this as I'm using a Samsung drive. I guess this is more processor related then?

Not really sure if this is right for me. Nothing on that link page really explains it either. hmmsmiley02.gif

It is a driver for your integrated sata controller, which is obviosly Intel made.

Thanks guys. Driver installed. It'll take a few days to see if things have got any better (remember, the benchmarks were great).

It's a few days on and no video stutters or apparent slowness on copying to HDD and USB HDD. I can't say 100% sure that the Intel drivers did the trick, or if the earlier weirdness was a fluke, but I'm running happily on AHCI now smile.gif
