[Build Log] Accipiter (AKA What to do with all this deployment dough when I get home)

Thread Starter

I'm coming home from deployment in a few months. My wife sold my last computer for me back in November, and I figured it was time to upgrade from Bloomfield and X58.  I'm ordering bits and pieces starting now, so they're ready for assembly when I get home.

Let me know what you think of my new build:

(Note: I'm awaiting the release of the new IB processors and Z77 motherboards)

MoBo:Asus Maximus V Gene mITX Z77

Might be moving to the Sabertooth (OC'ability and the extra SATA 6GB ports for raid) or the Formula (performance and extras, since size really isn't an issue

CPU: Intel IB i5-3570K (Yes, I plan on OC'ing)

PSU: Corsair AX850 (in anticipation of a second 7870 down the line)

GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD7870 OC edition (I loved my 6970s, but damn those 7970s are pricey. I'll "make do" with the 7870s.)

Scratch that. New 680s are out, and I've got time to wait for the EVGA 680 Classifieds to be released.
RAM:Corsair Vengeance 8Gb 1866MHZ (In anticipation of a matched set down the line; cheap-ish and fast. I've had good experience with them before.)

I decided to stick with the "top end" of everything else. Returning the Vengeance and ordered Corsair Dominator GT 8Gb @1866MHz instead.

Cooling: Corsair H100

Case: Corsair Obsidian 550D (I loved my 600T, but damn it was huge and noisy)

OS: W7 Pro 64bit

Primary Drive: Corsair Force GT 120GB

Newegg had Samsung 830s on sale for $89 apiece, so I snagged a pair to put in Raid0. Sorry Corsair, but I just couldn't pass that up. (Feel free to hit me up with some GTs for $90 apiece; I'll cancel this Newegg order before you can say "customer loyalty" thumb.gif)
Storage: 2x WD Black 1Tb (Raid0; I already have them)

TP: Artic Silver 5(I've used other stuff in the past, and I've always come back to the S5. It works.)

I plan on running a dual-monitor setup like I always have, but I'm holding off on new screens until I'm closer to coming home (free 2 day shipping from Amazon, yeehaw Prime). I'd like to see where prices go later in the year. Keyboard is my trusty G110, and my mouse is my amazing G700.

This thread is a placeholder for the complete build up when I get home.

Received so far:
OS W7 Pro 64Bit
Corsair 550D
Corsair Vengeance 8GB 1866MHz
TP Arctic Silver 5
Corsair AX850 PSU
Cooler Master Sickle Flow R4-L2R-20AR-R1 120mm fans
Ivy Bridge i5-3570K
ASUS ODD
EVGA GTX-680 Superclocked+
Corsair H100
Corsair Dominator GT 8Gb @1866MHz
2x Samsung 830 128Gb SSDs

Looks good I have to say, only thing I might wanna bump would be your PSU to an 850 just for a little more head-room for OCn'. Thank you for your service my fellow military friend. thumb.gif

That's a great point about the extra breathing room, especially after the second 7870 goes in. Thank you for your service as well, Yut.

Ok so now that the 680s have been released, I'm tempted to pick up one of the EVGA Classified's instead of the 7870. They're close enough in price and yet so far apart in performance, in favor of the 680. I've been a Radeon guy for years now, but I really think this would be a good time to switch.

In that same line of thinking, I also believe I'll be swapping the ASUS mobo for one of EVGA's Z77 offerings, though I'm not sure which yet, as they haven't been revealed or released, aside from the one picture they've posted on their FB page. I've had both brands in the past; both were great, and easy to OC. The only reason I changed from my EVGA X58 SLI LE was I got a smoking deal on an ASUS Rampage III Black Edition, which had built in USB3 for the new 600T I had just ordered (turns out the 600T only has a pass through cable, not an internal header connection >.< I had to order an adapter from Hong Kong...).

Does anyone have any opinions or critiques on my thinking here?

In terms of noise, the H100 cpu cooler is probably going to be the loudest when the system is idle. You may want to consider putting them on a fan controller or getting aftermarket fans. Luckily you can always evaluate that after the system is built. The gtx 680 is very quiet when idle, but only if your case has lots of airflow. I don't have a 550D, but buying a quiet low rpm fan to somehow shimmy near the GPU would likely help. The GTX 680 is 43 dBa at load which is very good compared to the 50+ dBa top of the line gpu's being released years ago, but still slightly noisier than average for top gpu's today.

Overall looks like a great rig and very similar to what I will be building when ivy bridge and maximus V gene are released.

Aye, I had planned on a decent FC (trying to get a hold of a Corsair Link, no luck so far; probably going to use a Lamptron of some sort), just hadn't included it in the build list here. And I'm picking up some Kingwin DB-122s to replace all of the stock fans.

I figure with the sound dampening and the ability to control the RPM of the case/radiator fans, I should be able to keep this guy pretty quiet, especially when I'm not using it for anything crazy, or trying to sleep. That was one of the biggest issues with my 600T; I had to turn it off at night because it was audible even through 2 doors and a hallway, and my wife was constantly asking me to close the door so she could watch TV or something. So I figure it'll be quieter no matter what, even under load, and almost silent when not in use.
