acer aspire cpu cooling fan (dead?)

i have an acer apsire 5734z-xxxx cant remember the last 4 if needed let me know. it started to run slow and freezeing, and some programs stop responding. so going thru i found the cooling fan wasnt spinning. i thought easy fix. i restarted the fan comes on for around 5 seconds then off until next restart. i took the fan out hooked it up to the 5v part of the molex in my computer to test but the fan works as long as it on full blast. any thoughts, is it still a bad fan or thermal chip somewhere.

i was trying to run male-ware bytes on the laptop after i got the fan to work and it freezes, so i removed the hdd and hooked it up to sig rig now that is freezing, is it possible that the hdd overheated as well or major error in the hdd rendering it bad

in all honesty i know nothing about the history of this laptop. my aunt got it used and she thought my cousin f'***ed it up by doing something that wasn't supposed to be done. im cloning the hdd right now to secure all the data on it before it crashes

if it makes a clicking noise when you shake it around, its perfectly normal, but if it is freezing in your own rig as well, then it has to be the hdd's problem, very unlikely it is overheating

i know its an old thread, but just an update. the hdd was bad i replaced it and it runs flawlessly. i ran chkdsk on the old hdd and it may have fixed the bad sectors for now.
