Will my CPU run without thermal compound ?

Thread Starter
so today when i was pulling out my PC from my closet the heat sink fall of so i had to remove the thermal of from the cpu and the heatsink, so i though id redo my old crappy 9500 gt thermal compound as well, so i went down to the computer stores few blocks away and what do you know, non of them have thermal compound, and i am pretty sure i will not find thermal compound easly spically here in uae where tech is not that much of a interest, so i orderd some mx-4 from a online store and it will be here in 4 days, which is alot for me without my computer, so will i be fine without thermal compound ?, at least for web browsing and other non CPU stress-ish stuff ?

LONG STORY SHORT

will my cpu and gpu run cool enough for any non gaming needs without thermal compound ?

Do you have stock cooling on them? or did you upgrade it? You may run warm so i would run coretemp with a thermal shut off just in case, set it about 70 degrees so they don't get too hot. . If it starts to get warm you may want to underclock to save some heat. I know best buy carries paste but stock is limited call and make sure they verify they have it.

Where do you live that you can't find TIM?

Sometimes places you wouldn't think to have TIM have it, I picked up some Antec Formula 7 nano at Staples last week because I was in a pinch.

NO!
Don't use it without TIM!
Maybe you can use it without it but you may fry your chip so don't risk it.

thanks alot guys, i think i am going to stick with my sisters laptop for now
@anubis1127 i live in uae, its a 3.5 hour drive to the computer plaza ( which is the main place for computer stores 90% of them actually) so i am not going to drive all the way over there just for some thermal tongue.gif

Ah, yeah, I've never been there. Did you try all the local office supply stores? That's what Staples is in the US, and I found TIM there. It sounds like a better idea to just use the laptop until you get your mx-4 in.

You could always use mayo...

On another note, I thought I saw somewhere on the forum where people said they could run no thermal if they lapped the heat sink and cpu?

If the face of the CPU and the heat sink are perfectly smooth, then it will actually run cooler. Unless you have done some crazy lapping, i would not try it.
