570 GTX SLI - Battlefield 3 question

Hello again all,

last week I pulled the trigger and got a second 570 GTX and OC'd both cards immediately to 850/2100/1700 @ 1.05v. Both cards were tested individually and they are both stable.

Last night I decided to try out Battlefield 3 with my new system and I was disappointed. Before I was running with 1 570GTX OC'd to about 900/2100/1800 and I was running a mix of ultra/high without a single drop below 60 fps. With the second card I maxed the game but I could barely stay above 60fps. After tweaking and dropping items I just dropped to the HIGH preset. Now at the HIGH preset the game dips below 60 every now and again still.

So why are 2 cards running worse then when I had 1. I have had no other game give me such horrid results.

  • Metro 2033 went from 50fps to 78fps
  • Just Cause 2 went from ~50 fps to 100fps
  • Anno2070 went from 60fps to 120fps

If it matters, when I added the second card I downloaded the 296.10 drivers and enabled SLI immediately after installing. MSI shows both cards as on in BF3 (99% load) and I see 8x/8x in GPU-Z (I saw this recommended in another topic)....

So if someone has any recommendations on what I could/should do to fix my terrible BF3 SLI results, please let me know.. It is annoying that the only game that isn't benefiting from my upgrade is the one I aimed to max.

EDIT: Additional information
1920x1080 x2 (While I play my second monitor is my music player / temperature monitor
Main monitor is 120hz
VSYNC is always off

Do me a favor, get gpu-z if you dont already have it (afterburner will work too) and play a round of bf3 at ultra, or even high settings. Leave gpu-z running in your background logging the stats. When youre done, select MAX at the vram section and see what the max vram it hits is. I had 570s and was sorely dissappointed in bf3 because it would fill every bit of vram on the card and stutter every several seconds or when things got action packed. A 1.5gb card is about just enough for what bf3 uses at ultra.

This ^^^

I am not happy with my BF3 performance at all. It completely loads up my vram and stutters on ultra.

When i had my 2 evga gtx 570's...in SLI in BF3 I was pulling an average of 110 fps with a 2600k cpu...neither the gpu or the cpu were overclocked, all stock settings.

Yeah check out GPU-Z and see how much you're using. I only have a 1920x1200 monitor and I've seen it peak up past 1.4-1.5GB on certain maps. It's eerie to think it uses that much but it does.

Also if you haven't.... disable Aero and see if anything changes a smidge. That's another thing I had to do.

That is strange.. I always thought SLI would share VRAM too and the issue would go away instead of getting worse! Anyways, I will load up some BF3 when I get home and I will completely max it with GPU-Z on.. I am very interested in seeing what could be messing my SLI system up this much... (Seriously, a single card ran better than SLI.. Is BF3 really coded THAT badly?)

are there any BF3 Sli profiles you can download?

How much VRAM do you use with your 580s?

SLI will only have as much VRAM as one of your cards not the 2 cards added together.

Wow, good to know. All these years I have had the wrong impression of SLI.. Oh well, you live and you learn.
