570 GTX SLI - Battlefield 3 question - Page 2

if you are playing ultra with a pair of 570's than you should only be getting between 60-120 fps anyways.... My pair of 6970's only get 75-140.. and btw - if you are playing anything lower than 1080p or at 1080p resolutions... the game doesn't use more than 1 gig of vram...

I go between 1.5 and 1.8gb on some maps, always on ultra.

Yea I was new to SLI when I got my 570's and thought the same thing, and ended up doing all my research on the back end of things. biggrin.gif Well you live and you learn.

GPU-z shows 1025 MB being used during games while playing ultra and a max of 95% across both cards... Also shows my cards as Running 16x 8x not 8x 8x like I originally thought.

All those other 3 games are single player, and have built-in benchies, right? But BF3 doesn't as far as I know (could be wrong on that), so I'm wondering if you're maybe kinda 'guessing' here ...

Firstly, are you 100% certain you're doing apples/apples comparison from before? That can be hard to be totally certain of when playing multi-player, if that's what you're doing. Because of that, I'd try comparing the exact same stretch of game, with SLI both enabled and disabled, using the exact same settiings, in the single player campaign. Do like a 4 minute run through a level using fraps to benchmark, try to do the exact same thing both times as near as possible ... then compare results. IOW try to create your own benchmark test ... you may 'think' you're getting worse performance when actually you're not.

i had pretty much the same issue but no performance drop going to 2 570's but the VRAM was always at 1.0 to 1.25 and it would stutter as soon as i hit the max. i never noticed it until karkand came out lol that's the reason i bought a second one than i learned that sli doesn't double your ram.... noob fail! everyone just says turn off mxaa... but that's the thing. i don't want to, it looks too good. so i sold both and now i'm awaiting the arrival of the gtx 680. i just don't know if i should cave and get the 2gb or wait it out for the 4gb. does anyone have any suggestions?

Harsh but true. For the other single player games they do have benchmarks that make it super easy to see the performance gain. BF3 on the other hand is getting my goat haha.

As per what you said I tried to replicate the same experience again and again using different setups / configurations but after about 5 runs in each of my 2 setups (1card vs 2 card) I did notice a difference in the numbers.

1920x1080, second monitor off. VSync always off. Tests were done using a 5 minute skirmish on Karkand Online and the first 5 minutes of single player
[All FPS readings were done using Render.DrawFPS true command and me recording it with a video camera (doesn't impact CPU performance)]
  • Ultra settings + Motion Blur off - 2 Cards - 850/2100/1700 - Online: High: 113fps; Low: 10fps SP: High: 80fps; Low: 43fps
  • Ultra Settings + Motion Blur off - 1 Card - 850/2100/1700 - Online: High: 55fps; Low: 40fps SP: High: 60fps; Low: 49fps

..Hmm I guess I should see from those results that I am getting a performance increase (especially on the online) but SLI experiences more random droops.. During all the tests I did notice my VRAM shooting up to 1100mb and 1200mb usage.. Judging by GPU-z it filled during the 10FPS moment during the online.. So I guess that answers my question, the combination of High/Ultra I had before must have been of less VRAM intensive options.I also tried turning off that SSAO/HBAO option and noticed a decent increase in frames but my frame stability wasn't great..

So now my final question! Does anyone have any good stable settings for BF3 and 570 SLI? (And damn, why does BF3 use all my VRAM!)
Yeah, unfortunately if there's times where there's a big rush of memory allocation happening while the game is running, SLI can actually perform worse than a single card setup during those moments.

The reason for this is that physically twice as much memory is needing to be filled (memory being mirrored as it is in SLi), and this process can become bandwidth starved somewhere along the chain.

When this happens IMHO it's actually more a reflection of bad coding practices on the part of the game programmers than anything 'wrong' with the cards or SLi. Games really shouldn't need to do this, as the vast majority of this type of loading should happen when a level is loaded, before you start playing. However, when gaming online it's a more tricky coding scenario ... or so I'd imagine ...

You might want to look into mods to the .ini file for the game, maybe there's some adjustments possible for pre-fetching or the like that you can mess around with, maybe reduce the impact/frequency of these occasions.

BTW, what's your averages on those four benches? Min and Max only tell you so much wink.gif

Can you explain how that can be done? And would that work in multiplayer as well?

Hate to revive an old thread but there is no point in starting a new one. Im looking into getting another gtx 570 and Im curious if the SLI performance in this game has increased or at least stabilized. My resolution is currently 1080p I do down sample from 2560x1440 in most games but not usually in BF3. I've been running high settings recently (ultra drops me well below the 60 mark). Just curious if the upgrade is worth it or is just more headaches. I did own some 8800gt's in SLI back in the day and they worked well except for running out of Vram in the later years.

570's just don't have enough Vram for BF3 unless you got the 2GB ones. The 1.3GB ones do not cut it. I dumped my 570s in SLI for a 680 and have been very happy!
