[The Inquirer] Nvidia's GTX680 gets thrashed by AMD's mid-range Radeon HD 7870 in GPU compute - Page 12

GPGPU performance is all over the place as alway, some architectures work a lot better with this and that...
also,
GF100 GTX 480, GF 110 GTX 580
GF104 GTX 460, GF114 GTX 460, GK104 GTX 680,

the GF104/114 in terms of GPGPU had some stuff seriously reduced, like FP64 performance,

I expect nvidia to have something better (GK100/110), and they may well release it first for the professional market only, I think.

Um, wut?

AMD would have so much room for gaming performance if they did not do GCN. I am guessing 7970 would be 100% better then 6970. I was wondering, why not make a GPU only for gaming purposes? Is it so complicated? Doesn't seem so. I think with that tactic AMD would take more % of the market...

AMD can have as much performance as they want..If the software side isn't up to scratch, it counts for nothing. Of course, there's a chance that nVidia has purposely gimped the GeForce's computer performance, but will leave it all enabled for Quadro and Telsa cards, didn't they do that with Fermi?

So true. While I generally admire the 7970 and think it is an outstanding piece of hardware, I can't get over the fact that if I leave Nvidia I will have driver issue after issue. Is that true? I dunno, but the perception is definitely there....

not true. I am with ATI for many years now, never had any bigger issues with drivers and I really mean never. But I also never had CF, which I think is why ppl are complaining about drivers.

Is it so wrong of me to want a card that does both gaming and has good compute performance?

I guess I am a terrible human being. Thank you OCN for putting it in perspective for me.

The thing is... who are you and why do you matter? This is technology built for people outside your world... if you don't care about, then why comment on it?

Cutting edge hardware guys need to know what to expect in the next few months. Build now... or wait...

Why not? Server racks of GeForce cards are MUCH cheaper than Quadro or Tesla cards.
Once again...

Um, because that's not what Geforce cards are designed for??? I thought you were smarter than that Duckie...
