That must be the most stupid title and article of a rumor I've ever read. No way GTX 680 is going to be slower than 7870...or 7970 even.

Do you not know what GPU compute is? Of course the GTX 680 is going to be slower than a 7970 at it. Look at the specs. If you are going to make such a negative post at least understand what you are dealing with. This has nothing to do with gaming performance.

These applications are for me :
- CUDA accelerated physic processing ( Flows, particules physics etc... ) in Maya
- Raytracing


But it seems the GTX680 is only castrated in DP mode not SP

How does this effect 3D modelling applications? Does it improve viewport performance? Does it improve speeds in realtime rendering such as Cinema 4D's physical renderer?

No it shouldn't. Only their OpenGL performance matters in this case. And as far as I know C4D renderer is not GPU accelerated so no gain or loss.

Correct, a few 3rd party rendering / simulation plugins will be effected and also Adobe After Effects is heavily CUDA based so will take a hit there. Sticking to the 580 it seems rolleyes.gif

I gotta go with the people who says this doesn't matter much. I mean the VAST majority of people buying 680s are buying them for BF3 not some random compute program. I understand some of you do so in that case get a 7970 or whatever card is going to do you best in it.

The real funny in all this though is that both the 7970 *and* 680 are 30% at best faster then a 580. You ask me both these cards are not nearly as impressive as they were supposed to be. I can't tell you how surprised after months of rumors I was the 680 was only 15% faster then the 7970 and at high resolutions was basically the same card. I believe the difference at 1600p was 5%? What a letdown.

So yeah in this post I made both the Nvidia fanboys mad *and* the OpenCL enthusiasts. Now everyone can pile on. thumb.gif

QFT. nVidia have been gimping their compute performance on GeForce cards for a while now.

While there are a few people who would genuinely need the compute performance here complaining..This further proves that the average OCN reader just looks at a graph and notes how long the pretty coloured lines are, then says whether a product is good or not based on that and nearly nothing else.
