3820 + Sabertooth x79. Recommend some RAM 4 me plz

So I've decided on this chip and board, just looking for the RAM. I plan on doing the standard OC with the 125 BLCK and 37 multi or whatever it is. I'm just not sure if there's a benefit to getting higher than the 1600 RAM speed based on the limited OC capabilities of this chip. Can anyone please clarify?

The main use will be online FPS gaming, so I guess I'd value quicker response times over larger overall RAM capacity. Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks

There's not much benefit to getting ram higher than 1600MHz in the first place, just make sure its a quality kit and you should be fine. Besides once you start getting into kits higher than 1600 they start to raise in price exponentially.

A quality 16gb 1600 kit will do you just fine and cost around 90-100$. Typically if your going X79 you are probably using it for more than just gaming anyway, and 16gb with the option to upgrade to 32gb gives you plenty of space to make use of ramdisks.

Also I wouldn't say the 3820 has limited overclockability considering people have gotten it above 5ghz, although the average user will probably settle for 4.6ghz for 24/7 use.

This is the kit I got for my upcoming X79 build.

Thanks for the reply. I will check into those.

Another question. What is the most optimal ratio when OCing this chip in regards to FSB and RAM. Does uping the BLCK from 100 to 125 the same as increasing the CPU freq by 25%? Will not having higher speed RAM put me at a disadvantage when trying to achieve optimal ratios?

Well I know you can get a pretty easy 4.3ghz overclock just by increasing the multiplier to 43.

Check out this thread for 3820 overclock results, and check this SB-E Overclock guide.

Generally X79 is really good with even crappy ram, so you should be good.

Great couple of threads, thanks! Very informative.

Been a few years since I threw my last rig together, been outa the mix for a while. Seems like upping the blck strap to 125 give the memory option for 2000 mem speed. I think I'm gunna go with the Gskill ripjaws Zs 16g, 4 sticks, but I think I'll go with some higher frequency than the 1600. Probably a really small performance boost if any, but if nothing else the higher speed RAM will come in handy if I ever upgrade to the 3930k or something else.

Thanks again for the responses James, I appreciate it! I'll be ordering my parts today, good luck on your build as well!

Anyone see any issues with using RipJawZ 2400 speed memory instead of 1600? It will be going into an Asus sabertooth / 3820.

Any feedback, good or bad will be much appreciated. Trying to order the stuff today. Thanks!
