Phenom II 965Be bottleneck 2 6870's or not? +PROOF please

Thread Starter
Hi all,

I know.. another of these bottleneck topics. Well the thing is, I searched the whole net about whether 2 6870's in crossfire will bottleneck a Phenom II 965BE and everywhere I look peaple say the exact opposite of eachothers.

- Some say it won't be a bottleneck at all as long as you use high resolutions etc.

- Some say it will be bottlenecked a little.

- Some say it will be severly bottlenecked and that I won't get acceptabel SLI performance. (Some even say that even 1 HD6870 will be bottlenecked by a 965BE.)

Now I already know that it has a lot to do whether the game is CPU or GPU intensive and at wich resolution and graphical settings you play.
But I really wan't to know if it is wise to buy a second 6870. Let's say for Mostly GPU intensive games like crysis or BF3?
Also when u reply can u please post some proof with it because I was told many things already that contradict eachother. I really wan't to know the truth now.
I'm running my 965BE at 4ghz and 2.6ghz NB. I use a resolution of 1920 x 1080 in almost any game.

Thanx on advantage

Well, I have a 6870 w/a BE955 and I can tell you even though its a decent cpu, it cannot handle the card the way I like and it does slow the gpu down. I've ordered a fx-4170 to replace the 955, so I should be able to honestly tell you one way or the other by end of this week if its the cpu or not, but I'm lead to believe it is a cpu bottleneck.. Hope that helps

I really don't think that upgrading to a bulldozer quad core will solve your problem. I read that these CPU's are worse than the Phenom II quads.

And this bottleneck your having. Is it with only one card?

I wish I had a second 5850 on hand to show you proof but I don't. Needless to say your processor should not be a burden to CF 6870's, not in 9/10 games with GTA IV being the biggest exception. BF3 should see good increase in performance, it's GPU bound no matter what people want to tell you (especially when they say, "try a 64 man MP server, it's CPU bound then").

If you're already aware of the things that will lighten the 'load' from using a CF setup (like VSYNC, capping frames, not applying AA - which is one of the main reasons to go to CF for a lot of people), then you should see scaling in the 80-90% range.

Your 955 is not bottlenecking that 6870 at all. If you think it is, you're been misinformed. Unless you're playing at 1280x720 or 1024x768 then maybe. Even then it still shouldn't.

Going to an AM3+ FX processor will not change things, not in the least, unless you're able to clock it to 4.8+.

Well I'm running at 960T at 4 GHz with 2 6850s and I will admit there is a slight bottleneck. On 64 player BF3 severs my frame rate will drop to about 45 - 50 FPS sometimes and my CPU usage is constantly above 95%. That is the only instance where my FPS drops below 60. I would say go for the second 6870. The bottleneck will be fairly small and in most cases not noticeable.

Sure NP. Find me a super cheap 5850 so I can CF and I'll prove it. thumb.gif

Buy the game, your rig is more than sufficient. Especially at 4.4Ghz......

Sooo is there any other way to prove it? tongue.gif Unfortunately, that OC is not 12hr prime stable, only 3DMark11, I could probably get 4.2, still workin on it redface.gif
