Validation of First Watercooling Build

Thread Starter
Hi!

This is my first post but I've been lurking on these forums for about a month. I got a nice bonus and want to build a water cooling system. It will be my first water cooled system, but not my first build.

My Goals are
1. Be as quiet as possible. Over-clocking is not a priority.
2. Cool existing components. (i7-2600k & 2x GTX 580)
3. Have enough headroom for future upgrades to Ivy Bridge/Sandy Bridge-E and 3 or 4 high end GPUs (7970 / Keppler) later in the year.
4. Have fun learning about and building a water cooled system.

Key components
Case - Caselabs MAGNUM STH10
Radiators - 2x Black Ice SR1 560 in lower compartment; 2x Black Ice SR1 360 in upper compartment
Pumps - Swiftech MCP35X2 with heat sinks
CPU block - XSPC Raystorm
GPU blocks - EK FC580 DCII with back plates and dual serial bridge
Reservoir - Bitspower Water Tank Z-Multi 250
Fittings - Bitspower compression fittings; Koolance VL4N quick disconnects to separate motherboard from loop
Tubing - Primochill Pro LRT white 1/2" ID 3/4" OD
Coolant - distilled water with nuke
Case fans (3 in front, 1 in rear) - Gentle Typhoon AP-15
SR1 560 fans (8) - Gentle Typhoon AP-15 with Bgears 140mm adapters in push configuration
SR1 360 fans (6) - Gentle Typhoon AP-15 in push configuration
Fan Controller - Aquaero 5 XT with water block and 3 Poweradjust 2 Ultras

Fans will be under-volted as much as possible (~500 RPM) to keep noise to a minimum.

Did I miss anything critical or are there better components.

Compression fittings are more likely to leak than barbs+ double zip-ties
3/8 tubing is less likely to kink..One of these days I'm going to switch back ph34r-smiley.gif

I'll will think on that, but I prefer the look of compression fittings vs. barbs & clamps. In fact I'd probably get the new Monsoon fittings if the 90 & 45 degree pieces were available.

I plan to use rotary connectors and angle adapters so the tubing will be fairly straight lines.

Ap 15s will stall before u can hit 500 rpm. 35-40% of the rated max speed is usually where fans stop
working. Look at noise blocker pk-2 or pk-3 instead of the gts since they're 140mm. My rig is nearly silent with them undervolted sans the psu fan.

That is good to know.

I can get PK-2s or PK-3s for the SR1 560. What would be equivalent for 120mm fans in the SR1 360s and the case itself? Noiseblocker PL-1 or PL-2?

I can get mine down to about 100-150RPM by feeding them a PWM signal, although at that point they might as well be off. But yes, on voltage control they don't go all that low; about 1100RPM @ 7V (low as my mobo would take them).

If you plan on running fans at anything under 1k rpm, I'd switch radiators. You can take a look here for a large comparison, but here's the 600rpm graph:

600zxwy6.png

The SR-1 is great at about 1k rpm, but for the ultra-slow fans, I'd go with the RX series of radiators. 4x140mm isn't an option in the RX-series, but looking at the performance gap at 600rpm, I'd say a quad 120mm RX480 would outperform the quad 140mm SR-1. As mentioned you won't be able to get AP-15s down that low, but AP-14s might, and AP-13s should have no problems. Of course, there are plenty of other options for low-rpm fans, at those speeds nothing is going to have much static pressure, and it isn't particularly needed.

The PL model is the 120mm equivalent

Black Ice rads do have a higher build quality tho. All of my RX rads are just sitting in my closet because of that.

Oh I'll definitely concede I like the build quality my Black Ice Xreme more than just about any other rad I've had, just pointing out the (pretty large) performance gap at these ultra-low speeds. Another option would be to just run your fans more like 1k rpm, closing that gap considerably while still being very quiet.
