New CPU and motherboard. I'm hopeless at this.

I never have time to dig into the market until something goes catastrophically wrong, as it just has. And then never enough time to learn everything.

Quick and easy:

Board

CPU

To go with the existing

2x4GB 1600mhz G.Skill Ram

Sapphire HD 6870

600w PSU

Tacky Peripherals

Problems I may not be aware of would be: Bottlenecks, strange performance issues that were never fixed by manufacturers, inability to cope with somebody who's a bit ruthless about overclocking and sometimes oblivious to murderous details like a GPU sitting right against the southbridge heatsink in 80 degree weather.

Rules for suggestions, because I need them:

Under 250 for the pair.

Idiot-proof PCI-E port location.

Something I can show off to the ladies. And by ladies I mean my cat.

If you're near a Microcenter in FL, you're going to get a ton of people recommending a 2500K+MOBO. With the $15 coupon + current deals, you'll be around $250, and you'll have a HUGE upgrade in performance going to Intel. Not to mention overclocking potential with a 2500K is just out of this world! I'd recommend:

2500K-
http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0354589

ASRock Extreme3 Gen3 Motherboard-
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157271

The motherboard at Microcenter is currently $126.98 - $50 for the MC Combo deal = $76.98 + 179.99 - $15 Coupon = about $260 after tax, this combo is amazing price to performance wise and it's cheap considering it will get you to 5 Ghz with an appropriate cooler/chip.

Good luck with whatever you choose!

+1 for this recommendation If you can afford it.

If not and you would like to save some money Microcenter also has the 960t + GA-990FXA-UD3 Socket AM3+ 990FX ATX AMD Motherboard for $160 (bundle) this week.

Micro in FL? there might be Fry's and just do a price match or whatever.

another option is the 960T and definitely a more reliable psu.

The PSU is horrible, something rebranded by Cyberpowerpc I can't remember what exactly at the moment, but it's still working whereas the motherboard has tourettes. It's next on the list to replace though, except now that I think about it when I maxed out my GPU (and I mean MAXED, 100% fan and everything) and my PC shut down it could have been the southbridge causing a thermal shutdown, since I now know just how big of a problem that was.

It'd cost me more in gas to find a Fry's or Microcenter than for the combo. There's a local computer store in town here, when I stopped in to ask about anyone who might be selling a used 6 or 8 core AMD processor the guy said it had been two weeks since anyone had even brought him a dual core to work on. I had to leave quickly, he was getting that look in his eye you see when someone who thought they were the only surviving person on the planet meets someone else after decades of trekking the wasteland. I didn't want to be chained to the furnace in the basement. It's online shopping or nothing.

Edit: This is the PSU, found my old post about it. Reading that and refreshing my memory on the exact details of what was happening, my PSU was definitely the problem. But still, I had to push it to break it. And again, next on the upgrade list.

Is there a viable reason for getting a 960t over the 6100 other than squeezing that board in? If that board is going to make such a significant difference, I'll find a way to pick up the hex-core and it if that would be double the fudge.

Short: Details behind your choices please.

Edit: On both of the Gigabyte boards suggested above my card would be heating the southbridge heatsink. On the Asrock board I would have to put it in the lower PCI-E slot, but that's alright. My slots aren't crowded as you can guess.

This is becoming a pain, all because Sapphire wanted to leave a gap in the shroud to show off the copper piping. They did a good job not showing that in the pictures also.

Engineers need to stick with engineering and keep their fingers out of product presentation. I also like how amazon.com couldn't clean the lint off before taking their pictures.
