I'm out now, before this really get's out of hand.
It was actually a really big debate when EXT4 was in it's pre stages. Way back before they truncated the name, it was like EXT4_alpha or something. Anyways EXT4 has some severe improvements to speed, the problem is that legacy support. I could see business folk and server work requiring it, outside of that EXT4 is pretty much the replacement. You shouldn't ever have to mount EXT4 as EXT3 anyways. At least speaking from a mainly linux user, I see no reason as I would rather transfer files between win/linux in linux anyways.

And on that note:
I was pretty close to telling him to sod off... Plan9 just wouldn't read ****, even my cited stuff. The only way I know you can't do it was because back when it started you couldn't format EXT4 in any linux installer. I wanted to test it, so I had to create my linux system with EXT3 then convert. This posed a problem, all my files wouldn't have the advantages until they got over written. So to counter this, I used a debian net install and printed out what I had to change. Mind you, this was all blind, as I didn't even know if my changes would work ok and I get a booting system. I did, after a few tries of tweaking my commands. Back then every guide said you won't be able to mount EXT4 as EXT3. Which made me really angry when I forgot to change ext3 to ext4 in fstab.... Needless to say I learned quick.
The point was, I could argue the same point over and over knowing it's true and he would keep up his end with his "knowledge". Despite me having sources that are reliable, I apparently still know what amounts to a plop of poop.Edited by mushroomboy - 3/27/12 at 1:52pm
