What made Vanilla and BC feel so much harder is that a casual would be denied access to certain areas where only the best guilds were allowed to tread. That was a symbol of your prowess over the game. Sure Heroic Lich King was just as hard as Kil'Jaeden, but it was nowhere near as epic because you could do the same encounter at the Normal level. With the former, if you saw someone with full T6, you knew that they were some of the best players in the game and they had done encounters you hadn't.
I'm not arguing that such a system is good or bad; simply that it increases the divide between the casual and the hardcore. Ultimately, the hardcores will like that and the casuals will not; the hardcores will leave and the casuals will stay. And ultimately, the level and calibre of the player decreases.
I was never a hardcore player (I got to Vashj and Kael'thas pre-nerf but both destroyed my guild), but I never minded not seeing those hard, hard encounters. I knew I wasn't ready for them.
Just my 2c.

Agree 1000%. When i was playing Vanilla you had to play for countless hours to gather blue gear in order to start raiding. Epic loot came only fro raid bosses and ofc you needed an above the average guild with dedicated raiders to even start thinking about purples. It was a huge achivement when my hunter was dressed up in full Dragonstalker with the BWL xbow. To get all these gear i was raiding till 4 or even 5 oclock in the morning, but i had fun. Nowadays you just have to take queue for 10 min and join some randoms 5 man runs, pick up some tolkens and buy top ilvl gear. It needs some time ofc but its boring and even a 5 year old can do it if he knows how to press 1-2-3 buttons. And what was a clear dissaster for me was the LFR option. I have seen ppl in greens, who just dinged 85, to participate in raids and want to loot while they didnt ever understand basic commands like 'stop dps'. I have always been a member of top end raiding guilds and ever now i had the chance to get in one of the top 3 guilds in agammagan. But i quit wow 2 months ago. Blizz decided to make it a game for everyone, i dont have fun with it anymore.

Not sure how you saw people in greens in raids, most people wouldn't let them in the raid. Now of course the raid browser requires an average ilvl. Still doesn't help the skill part. Also people can just do battlegrounds to get gear good enough for the end raids. It's a little extreme but doesn't really both me since I've been a hardcore raider before and just want to play casual now.

Well that's lame... The annual pass went on to my account that hasn't been active for over 3 years. Hopefully I will get into the beta since I want to try this game out before I go and jump the gun and buy it like what I did with Swtor. But yeah I kinda miss the 25 man raids where it was acutally fun but the thing is I can't be hardcore as much as I was back in high school, but I did join a weekend guild that only raid twice a week and we got 4/13 heroic in cata before I quit. I can't say much about difficulties these day but H rag did look intense and worse than firefighter.

They have both greens and epics from vendors and the average ilvl is high enough to attend the raid.

The game is basically:
People that raid 10 hours a day are 5% stronger than the people that raid 10 hours a week. That's one of the main reasons I quit, it wasn't worth the time investment to get that gear (and I was a active raider in a top 10 USA guild on wowprogress, so it came easier to me than 99.99% of the players). By the time your guild can kill a boss on hard mode, you can that same boss on normal mode with NO effort at all. It makes all the bosses feel fake.

Back in the MC, BWL, AQ40, Naxx40 days, killing a boss seemed meaningful. There was no "easier" mode, and when you killed someone it was great. You slowly worked your way through the dungeon, which usually took a few months to fully clear the first time and after you cleared it once, you could clear it again every week because your guild learned all the encounters. Ever since WOTLK - the game, for our guild, was clear normal mode the first week the content released to unlock hard mode (this took little to no effort for us, but this is the content that 99% of WoW players are playing).. then grind hard mode for about 50-100 hours that week until we could clear every boss in hard mode each week. It seemed so stupid since we were pretty much just repeating content, with higher numbers, after the first week. Whereas with Pre-BC and BC you actively were progressing further and further into a dungeon each week with no "easy" way to see the content.

Looking forward to GW2 since it got rid of the typical raid grind. Max armor is easily attainable for everyone, and the dungeons are designed around having fun... not grinding better gear by doing the dungeon 50 times. Loot tables are individual, so there's no worry about if you will get a item that dropped. GW2 is not doing the whole normal/hard mode thing. They are doing story and exploration modes for their dungeons. Story mode tells a small story about the dungeon as you clear through it and sets it up for exploration mode. Exploration mode is the harder version that must be done after the story mode version, but it's content is completely different than the story mode - so it doesn't feel like you are just doing the same boss with more health, 1 new mechanic, and much higher damage numbers.

I agree with you but you cannot get tokens that give you top ilevel gear without doing hard modes... which still require a good guild. Almost any guild can do normal modes though, and that gear is only slightly worse.

This is why I love wow for back in BC and WoTLK up to ulduar. I was dissappointed when they release normal/heroic mode. Seems like the dev were to lazy to make the encounter feel alot different and just say hey let's up the boss health/damage and the same boss mechanic! But people feel differently about games that they like.
Also feels like they are killing the community with the LFD and LFR since no one really do heroics like back in the days where you actually have to look for everyone. Even though people can still do it, people don't want to since they rather sit in the main city and just talk in trade chat.

You still play other games?

Ever since I started playing MMOs.. I rarely branch out to non-MMOs. The exceptions are popular indie games like Terraria, Minecraft that you can just play whenever and don't have endings. I really can't get into most games now, they are only like 5-12 hours long.. and it seems like a waste of time. Most non-MMO multiplayer games are just the same 3-4 maps over and over and over with nothing else to do (feels lacking compared to a MMO). MMOs have got me into the mindset of "if it's not going to matter next week, why bother?".

I've had about a 6 month down state (quit WoW after playing since launch, now waiting for GW2) and I still haven't touched other games. I played Skyrim for 70 hours, which was great, but after you get most quests done the rest was boring and I have no will to do it or restart the game.. the whole "it won't matter next week, why waste time on it" just makes me not want to play.

Thats how i feel after quiting wow. No game matters to me that much now. I tried Aion a little, but didnt convience me to bother. I may have a look into GW2 but Diablo is what i m waiting to try out. I wished i had a beta key.
