Ever since I started playing MMOs.. I rarely branch out to non-MMOs. The exceptions are popular indie games like Terraria, Minecraft that you can just play whenever and don't have endings. I really can't get into most games now, they are only like 5-12 hours long.. and it seems like a waste of time. Most non-MMO multiplayer games are just the same 3-4 maps over and over and over with nothing else to do (feels lacking compared to a MMO). MMOs have got me into the mindset of "if it's not going to matter next week, why bother?".
I've had about a 6 month down state (quit WoW after playing since launch, now waiting for GW2) and I still haven't touched other games. I played Skyrim for 70 hours, which was great, but after you get most quests done the rest was boring and I have no will to do it or restart the game.. the whole "it won't matter next week, why waste time on it" just makes me not want to play.

I try, it doesn't work out too well. I generally end up buying a bunch of games and not playing them. Currently have Skyrim, Deus Ex and Rage on my comp that I haven't even touched. My cousin keeps telling me how awesome they are and how great my rig runs them lol.

I plan on playing a little wow when I get back here soon, then playing the crap out of Diablo 3.

I think you folk are being slightly biased towards Vanilla and BC, the difficulty of the bosses and the game as a whole were slightly higher than they are now yes, but there are factors to be taken into account. Back in Vanilla and BC, most raiding guilds were terribad, most people Keyboard turned and gear optimisation was dire. The bosses tactics were easy in comparison to Raggy Heroic for example. I never get the same feeling anymore from killing a boss though, it does often seem too easy, even with Hard/HC modes. I remember jumping off my chair shouting at the top of my lungs "WE WERE PREPARED, D**KHEAD" the first time we killed Illidan (I actually cried with joy, real man tears). I remember breaking my keyboard and mouse after my guild disbanded in Vanilla on our billionth wipe with Twin Emps in AQ40.

There is NO way of getting this back now though. Its something that dissapears unless you're being competitive within the raiding scene (top 3 of server/top 50 EU/Top 100 World). Once you're good enough to get the job done in a couple of raid nights there isn't much joy...when I went back to WoW AGAIN for Cata, my and my housemates all jumped onto a Server, we were all DAMN GOOD at WoW and we all got into a top raiding guild. But we all wanted more, we found ourselves yearning to be in a better raid group or guild, hated it constantly being top of DPS/Healing, never making mistakes and always raging at the idiots who cannot learn. Hence why I quit raiding and went to PvP, and when my Arena Partner quit WoW, so did I! I would be playing it now (got scroll of res and got that 80+ Mage I've always wanted but could never be arsed to level) but Blizzard have taken my soul (or whatever ginger people have) for SC2 xD

TL:DR - Basically, WoW is not easier, its just we are better. WoW is actually more complex (in Hard Modes) than it ever was in Vanilla or BC, Its just that us folk who remember Vanilla and BC are now just prepared for everything WoW can throw at us, we know not to stand in the fire, we know not to get cleaved and we certainly all know that Deadly Boss Mods is freaking ridiculous these days. What would make it much better is bringing back those horrible factors that have all but disappeared ; How many of you Cata folk know what OOM means? xD How many of you have seen a tank get one shotted by a crushing blow? How many of you have killed an entire raid just by giving a boss a Soul Charge (SOUL CHARGE - FEAR INTO FIRE - SILENCE HEALERS - DIE - BOSS GETS MORE SOUL CHARGES - PEOPLE GET STUNNED - CRUSHING BLOW/TANK DIES - PEOPLE RUN AWAY - FINGER OF DEATH)

Anyway - yeah, on the subject, I HATE PANDAS, WHAT THE HELL BLIZZ?

WE KILL DEMONS, DRAGONS AND GODS, BUT NOW WE HAVE TO ALLY OURSELVES WITH DRUNK PANDAS TO DEFEAT THE LOOMING ENEMY?

I'm going to play it, because I play every expansion. And I like to race (and win) my friends to max level.

Meh, don't really care, even tho I am subscribed to annual pass. I figured it might be better if I just ditch it and buy Diablo 3 CE, it's gonna be played 10 years from now, so it's worth it.
WoW died for me back in WotLK, I came back for Firelands, raided a bit but lost interest once I cleared DS. It's just new old more of everything. Boring as hell. SWTOR was not much better, sci-fi WoW with lightsabers (I still don't understand why didn't they make Mass Effect MMO instead of Star Wars, it would've been better and cheaper).
Got into Tera beta this weekend, gonna try that and see if it's worth spending some time & money.

Hey that makes it awesome. My favourite hero in WC3 was the pandarian brew master. I wonder how this will do since D3 is going to be out too. I think Ill see future threads of WOW vs D3 which will divide quite alot of people and have constant flaming.

I'll probably play through the expansion but I was thinking the same thing.

What made Vanilla and BC feel so much harder is that a casual would be denied access to certain areas where only the best guilds were allowed to tread. That was a symbol of your prowess over the game. Sure Heroic Lich King was just as hard as Kil'Jaeden, but it was nowhere near as epic because you could do the same encounter at the Normal level. With the former, if you saw someone with full T6, you knew that they were some of the best players in the game and they had done encounters you hadn't.
I'm not arguing that such a system is good or bad; simply that it increases the divide between the casual and the hardcore. Ultimately, the hardcores will like that and the casuals will not; the hardcores will leave and the casuals will stay. And ultimately, the level and calibre of the player decreases.
I was never a hardcore player (I got to Vashj and Kael'thas pre-nerf but both destroyed my guild), but I never minded not seeing those hard, hard encounters. I knew I wasn't ready for them.
Just my 2c.

yeah I completely agree. Back in vanilla I didn't raid, and seeing people walking around in full t1/t2 was probably the most awe inspiring part of wow for me. And you know what? I was happier then, in my dungeon set blues, than I am now in welfare epics and having seen all of the content through casual methods. Im not saying the game is objectively worse now (its probably objectively better) but for me, the game lost its luster with the increase in accessibility of end-game content.

Don't know what it was about BC but it was by far my favorite. The sunwell and Zul Aman additions made it even better.

In my mind, nothing will compare to downing Illidan back in BT with my guild.

However, TBC was also the first expansion to bring about the "casualization" of WoW. Because, I can remember back in Vanilla, we used to follow around those who walked around in T1/T2/T2.5/T3. Literally, these people (during the respective periods of content) would have masses following them to look at the gear.

In TBC, this happened to an extent. Sure, people commented on my T6, but that was nothing compared to before, due to PvP sets being recolored tier gear.

Forget your tier gear meaning anything in Wrath and higher. So many people had access to raids and content that tier gear was not any sort of distinction.

There are so many factors that brought about these changes, from an increased player base, to easier access to raiding, and more. But, from my own personal point of view, and what keeps me from going back, is realizing that I will never have that "unique" feeling that I had back in TBC.

(And before someone mentions it, I realize that there are now mounts that can be more "unique," but that just doesn't seem the same to me. Again, personal preference.)
