CPU Only Works Without IHS?

Thread Starter
So after solving a week old issue with water cooling, I decided to go for even lower temps. I did this by removing the IHS on the CPU.

The CPU in question would be an AM2 Athlon 64 x2 5000+ Brisbane core. I've removed countless IHS's before so that's nothing new, but this problem is. Initially when I removed the IHS and cleaned all the dried up TIM off, I saw a massive temperature drop. It would idle at ambient temps w/ 1.5v thumb.gif

This morning I was checking email and PM's then all the sudden my system locked up. No load, and nothing was hot. So I booted it back up and it crashed again, and then finally it would not even post. At that point I'm thinking the CPU had enough, and considering its seen runs with voltage in excess of 1.65v, it didn't surprise me one bit. So to be sure I started testing things and nothing seemed to be working.

After about 2 hours of messing with the board / ram / and re-seating the CPU I decided to just run the CPU without the IHS for the hell of it. It booted and it works excellent....? I pulled the block off, cleaned everything up, put the IHS back on (and was careful not to move it) and tried it again. Nothing. The fans spun and that's it. I took the IHS off and its working again thinking.gif

I tried several times to remount the IHS to no avail. The system will only run if the IHS is NOT on the CPU. If i put the IHS on, it does nothing and refuses to boot. The only real problem with not using the IHS would be pressure against the core. The H60 block bottoms out way to early. Temps are still good, but about 2c higher than what they previously were.

Anyone ever heard of that before?

By IHS are you refering to the heatsink with the fan? IHS stands for internal heat spreader and is the square metal on top of the processor that cant be removed easily.

It sounds like the OP is talking about the Integrated Heat Spreader, not the HSF.

It's possible the CPU/socket/mobo is damaged and the pressure from the IHS being in place is causing an open circuit???? Temps don't make sense however.

I'd try a different CPU if you have one.

Strange Indeed.

By IHS I mean I physically cut the lid off the CPU with a razor blade to expose the CPU die.

Yes, its very strange. I had to raise voltage 0.025 because of the extra heat as well. With the IHS in place (cut off, but reinstalled using fresh AS5) temps were excellent, and I could run with 1.45v. Due to the extra heat, I had to raise voltage to 1.475 to be Prime stable.

With the IHS removed and placed back on with fresh time between the core/IHS = Temps never exceeded 37c under load @ 1.45v

With the IHS completely removed, and the H60 applied directly to the naked core = Temps are in the 40c range under load @ 1.475v

I believe this is due to the H60 bottoming out and not applying enough force against the CPU die. The only thing I haven't tried would be to use a different IHS from another CPU (same physical size) or cover the surrounding chips with some type of sealant.

Just tried using 3 different IHS's from other chips, including the stock one.

I used IHS's from an Opteron 170, A64 3800+, A64 3200+ and the stock x2 5000+.

With any IHS's on the CPU die = Does not post. I tried them loose and really tight. When I had them loose, the system never once posted. With them medium tightened down, it posted randomly but froze within less a minute. With the H60 tightened down really hard I could almost boot into windows, but it would BSOD shortly after the windows logo.

I cleaned everything up really nice with 91% rubbing alcohol and mounted the H60 to the naked core using a normal amount of pressure, and it worked first try. I then tried to use an IHS again, and got the same results as before. I also tried mounting the block 180* from its normal position, but that didn't help either.

And just for the hell of it, I tried another CPU mounting bracket but again, same problem

It seems this CPU absolutely hates having an IHS on it tongue.gif

Wait, once you remove the IHS you shouldnt put it back on, all it would take is a air pocket and the core temp would shoot up. Once you remove the IHS you really cant use it again. If you need some more hight on the die use some tin foil.
